K-Beauty addicts, hold onto your seats for this revelation! Gone are the days when we'd straight up use sheet masks out of the fridge. Instead, Allure.com reports that we should be heating up our beauty masks before putting them on!
We've all heard of storing our eye creams inside the fridge because the cooling effect helps in depuffing. But the thought of having to put on a heated up face mask in a hot and humid weather like ours just seems absurd, right?
BUT, you need to hear us out! SoKo Glam founder Charlotte Cho tells Allure.com that this method isn't new in Korea. "There are some 'warming' sheet masks and treatments that are applied because they believe warm products will absorb better in the skin." And this does make sense. Hot water opens up our pores and helps our skin absorb the product better.
This claim is supported by dermatologist Joshua Zeichner of Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. He says in an interview, "Warm water and steam soften the outer skin layer and dilate blood vessels to enhance delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the skin. Applying a cosmetic product or mask to a warm face generally may help enhance penetration of the active ingredient into the skin."
Though, a word of caution, ladies. You don't have to go to the extreme and actually defrost or heat up your masks in the microwave. Unless it's specifically instructed by the manufacturer, you may just want to keep the masks in room temperature before you use it. Or, as Charlotte shares, "A traditional way of [warming up your products] is by rubbing your hands together to create heat and friction, and then applying the products with your warmed-up hands." Easy!
