What it is:

At a press trip to Shiseido HQ in Tokyo, I discovered that the brand’s research has found that women in their 30s share a common complaint: that their skincare products no longer seem as effective in addressing their various concerns. An old theory is that your skin has been desensitized to the products, and you need to switch up your routine to see results again. Working with the Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Cutaneous Biology Research Center, Shiseido’s scientists have studied the connections between our brains, body, and skin and come up with skincare technology that’s inspired by neuroscience.

Apparently, our daily exposure to UV rays and pollution damages our skin at a cellular level—in particular, the mitochondria that power our cells—causing it to be less responsive. When skin’s responsive power is low, it won’t be able to send signals to the brain for the body to react accordingly, repair the damage, and regenerate anew. And this is why your skincare seems ineffective. To resolve this, Shiseido has developed ReNeura Technology that works to re-energize skin to boost and optimize it. The brand’s newest line, Essential Energy, is the first of a foreseeable array of product offerings guided by this discovery. It’s main ingredient is extracted from the Ashitaba plant—found in Japan’s Hachijo-jima island, it has been used by healers for centuries. It’s called the “tomorrow leaf” because if you pick its leaves today, they grow back the next. It’s this natural source of vitamins and minerals that Shiseido’s scientists have found to help prevent further damage to skin’s mitochondria, keeping its power to activate your cells intact. The moisturizing formulas, whether cream or gel, also contain an Active Response Powder whose elastic structure allows the product to be better absorbed by your skin, while at the same time awakening your skin’s perception.

Current Condition

I’m in my late 30s and I’ve tried multiple products. Skin analysis has told me that I have combination skin, though I really battle with oiliness and bad breakouts before I get my period. Fine lines around my eyes, enlarged pores, and emphasized laugh lines framing my mouth are signs of aging that seem to have become more apparent in the last two years.

How I used it

I usually use a day cream and a night cream, but I wanted to really see the effects of this product by using it as my sole moisturizing product. Starting December 2017, Shiseido’s Essential Energy Moisturizing Gel Cream was the most consistent part of my beauty regimen apart from my cleanser and SPF. I applied it in the morning after using toner or a booster, and after my serum at night. I patted it on all over my face and neck, even around my eyes. (Yes, I actually have not used an eye cream for five months. The lead scientist at Shiseido HQ told me that the product was safe to use even around the delicate eye area.) I especially like how cool to the touch the formula feels, as well as how easy it is to spread across the face without rubbing.

Conclusion

Just last weekend, I received two compliments about my skin, a surprise for someone like me who has battled acne eruptions and the pigmentation that comes with it all her life. I have in fact observed that despite the odd pimple or two, my skin no longer erupts before my period. My complexion has also remained even-toned, and allowed me to skip foundation on most days. And when I do have the odd pimple scar, I've noticed that the effects of the brightening serum I apply to lighten it come faster. My usually oily skin instead looks hydrated and glowing—the perfect glassy canvas for pink or peachy sunburn blush. The best part, I’m on month five and it’s only now that my pot is looking empty. Meaning, with controlled use, even if it’s twice a day, the product can give you six months worth of benefits before you’ve to buy a new one.
