The City Girl's Guide to Looking Fresh in the Summer Heat

Bring on the heat.
The City Girl's Guide to Looking Fresh in the Summer Heat Bring on the heat.

With summer just around the corner, we spill insider secrets on how sizzling urbanites stay fresh and glowing under the scorching sun. C’est très simple:

1. Skip steaming showers for luscious skin

Colder months demand soothing hot baths that strip away moisture from your skin and scalp. Opt for a quick shower under tepid (warm if you must, but not hot) water with rich suds. Look for ingredients like oatmeal to buff away dead skin cells and smooth dull skin, finish off with shea butter and coconut milk for a relaxing experience that nourishes your body and renews your senses.

2. Embrace essential oils for soft bouncy hair

Adopt a monthly pre-bathing ritual (or twice a month for damaged hair) of wrapping your hair in a mask of macadamia oil, argan oil or jojoba oil. Remember, a little goes a long way. Concentrate on the ends and massage (without adding more product) all the way to your scalp. Keep the mask on for about 30 minutes to avoid weighing your hair down. Rinse out and shampoo as usual, then blast your tresses with cold water to lock in moisture and bring out shine.

3. Take charge of the first three minutes post-shower for a dewy complexion

Those first three minutes after you step out of the bath are precious for being the perfect time to replenish your face with moisture lost in the shower. Softly pat (never rub) your skin dry, and with your ring finger (which offers the lightest touch among your fingers), tap your face and neck with a day moisturizer before layering with BB cream with SPF. Do the same for the under eye area before working with your favorite concealer. At night, opt for a heavier cream with ingredients that rejuvenate your skin as you sleep and recharge for another day.

4. Subtle sparkle for irresistible stems

As hemlines rise, show off those gams that you’ve been working on all year with body creams that not only nourish but also complement your tan. Make sure to buff your legs in the shower for a smooth surface and generously moisturize to give that golden, sun-kissed look a glow that radiates health and youth.

5. Hydrate from the inside out for a beautiful glow

We can never say enough about drinking water as a calorie-free, anti-bloat cure-all. While it is not necessary to swear off your daily designer brew or airy soda in favor of water, opt to drink one glass of water for each cup of coffee or glass of juice to flush out extra sugar from your system and offset the dehydrating effects of caffeine. For those who find it a chore to drink such a bland beverage, get those blenders working and turn water-rich food into a cocktail to keep yourself satisfied while effortlessly shedding off excess pounds and toxins. Think watermelons, strawberries, grapefruits and cantaloupes.
