And it’s right on trend this year.

How can one quit contouring? It makes you look sculpted, so sharp, so svelte! We know plenty of fashion girls quitting the plakado makeup look and trading it in for a fresher, bare, plump-cheeked (if that’s your natural shape) face, but if you’re just weaning off of it just in time for the summer, here’s a great alternative: violet blush. More precisely, plum. But because we all have different skintones, violet is a great umbrella shade to begin with.

We know, wth? But hear us outthink disco, a more adventurous flush, think about how you’d choose a darker cheek tint shade because berry looks better on morena than flat out red. Plus, the cooler undertone allows you to apply it on a wider surface area without looking too flushed. This is how women contoured in the age of color makeup (the ‘70s), and makeup addicts know that placement is key for contour done by blush.

But how to wear it the 2018 way? First, take either a fan brush or a big fluffy brush (pinched to make it thinner) and dip into a shade such as The Balm’s Instain Blush in Pinstripe (P975, Beauty Bar), a muted berry hue. Either of the brushes make for a diffused application, which is great for unusual colors. Start with the outer corner of your eye or your temples, and draw the brush down in a diagonal line. Apply it like you would a taupe contour, but a bit higher than your blush’s usual spot. If you like a softer finish, try a cream formula like Revlon’s Insta-Blush in Berry Kiss (P575, SM Beauty Store).
