Look, you don't really need a Patrick Bateman-style nine-step skincare routine to have good skin. All you need are a few good products, consistent care, and the right methods. But, before we even tell you how to properly take care of your skin, first, we need to breakdown the most common skincare mistakes you probably don't know you're making. From what you're overdoing to what you're missing out on, here's what's hindering you from having good skin.
1. Deep cleansing... and nothing else
These days, you see nothing but ads promoting deep cleansing. There's always a spiel about how tough men's skin is, and how pollution and grime are the biggest enemies. While that may be somewhat true, over-cleansing is very much a thing. What you rarely see, however, are products for moisturizing. And moisture is what you need back after using harsh cleansers and toners. Just remember to cleanse, tone, and moisturize with mild products—which brings us to our next point...
2. Not checking the ingredients list
Don't blindly buy without reading the ingredients list, especially if it's a friend's recommendation. You could be allergic to fragrances, for one, and your friend could be fine with it. What else should you look out for? Parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, toluene, and formaldehyde, to name a few.
3. Exfoliating too much
Exfoliators are the harshest skincare products out there. You may not know it, but over-exfoliating can cause micro tears which then makes skin more dry and dull. It eventually leads to more harm done than good. Ideally, you should only exfoliate two to three times a week if you have normal skin, and once a week if you have more sensitive skin.
4. Using multi-purpose products
Just because 3-in-1 face, hair, and body washes exist doesn't mean you have to use them. Things is, skin is all different. Some experts even treat different parts of your face with different products. So, it makes no sense to skimp on your skin and lazily use the same product. No dice. Yep, that includes body soap on your face.
5. Neglecting your face after working out
A shower after a workout is a given, but what about when it comes to your face? With a workout comes sweat, and that unwashed can welcome blemishes. It's not only that that you have to think about. There's also washing off the day's dirt before heading to bed too, of course.
6. Skipping sunscreen
Lastly, there's an absence of sunscreen in men's skincare routines. It's an extra step, but it really helps in the long run. If you're too lazy to add another product, at least pick up a moisturizer that also comes with SPF. You'll thank us in the future.
