Hit restart on your skin without neglecting the essential steps!

Whether you’re a beauty aficionado junkie or just a beginner starting out, there’s no denying that experimenting with chemical exfoliants like AHA, BHA, PHA, and retinoids are part of the fun with skincare. With so many products on the market, and even more continually developed every day, experimenting with different active ingredients is quite common. But while it’s tempting to play scientist, being overzealous with applying different skincare products that have these active ingredients may bring more harm than good.

What happens when you use too many exfoliating products?

Too much of a good thing, like frequently applying too many chemical exfoliants, has its consequences. When used moderately, chemical exfoliants can help in renewing the skin surface which to reveal smoother and brighter skin. If too many chemical exfoliants are layered at once, the tendency is that the skin can become irritated and overly sensitive, thus damaging the skin barrier.

You can tell your skin barrier has been compromised when you have an overall look and feel of irritation. Other clues that point to a compromised skin barrier are redness, itching, flaking, and even more breakouts.

How can you heal your skin?

The only good thing about it is that repairing the skin barrier isn’t actually hard to do! A great fix for this skin issue is trying out a "skincare detox" (or in other words, a skincare diet), where you essentially cut back on using too many harsh ingredients in order to restore your skin's healthy and glowing state! Keep on reading and you’ll discover that a skincare detox is actually quite simple, yet highly effective at treating our skin woes:

1. Keep your routine straightforward.

We need to allow the skin to renew itself, and keeping a simple skincare routine can do wonders at bringing it back to its normal state. Stick to the basics like incorporating a gentle cleanser to wash away dirt and oil, a mild toner, a light moisturizer, and sunscreen if you’re going outside. It’s also best to skip putting on makeup for a few days in order to let your skin fully recover faster.

A light moisturizer to choose that doesn’t feel sticky would be the Sunnies Face Dream Cream that’s filled with skin-plumping goodness (niacinamide, ceramides, and hyaluronic acid) that helps protect the skin barrier.

2. Don’t forget to double cleanse.

Speaking of cleansing, incorporating double cleansing to your routine can give added benefits to your skin's overall health. Using an oil-based cleanser before a water-based one can make sure that you're really lifting away the excess gunk on your skin that builds up throughout the day. This then makes cleansing with the water-based cleanser more effective at addressing your other skin concerns like hydration and moisture.

3. Focus on healing and nourishing ingredients.

So what products are recommended for you to use when going on a skincare diet? Products with gentle yet nourishing ingredients are the way to go, such as ceramides that are lipids found in skin cells and can help in retaining moisture while also protecting the barrier. Other ingredients to look out for are centella asiatica, hyaluronic acid, or niacinamide that all aid in maintaining skin moisture and treat irritated skin.

4. Go easy on the acids.

During your skincare detox, it’s best to leave out any active ingredients all together to ensure that your skin's barrier can heal properly from the damage caused by overuse of chemical exfoliants. But if you insist on using some form of exfoliant on your skin, a gentle acid like lactic acid or glycolic acid in small concentrations can be used every few days.
