Department of Trade and Industry Secretary Ramon Lopez said on April 27 that there must be new health protocols for salons and barbershops before being allowed to resume operations in areas under general community quarantine (GCQ) on May 1.

Before grooming establishments can re-open, there must be strict policies in place to ensure that social distancing and proper hygiene guidelines are followed to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Lopez told DZMM.

These establishments also need to make sure there will be no sharing of equipment between customers to curb COVID-19 infections.

"Sa totoo lang, malaking debate pa ho iyon. Ang problema doon, social distancing at pag-gamit ng mga equipment," Lopez said.

"Pinaguusapan pa 'yan, what would be the new health protocol under [general community quarantine]. There’s a good chance na mabuksan na 'yan pero dapat may protocol," he added.

On April 24, President Rodrigo Duterte announced an extension of the enhanced community quarantine in Metro Manila and other high-risk areas with many cases of COVID-19 infections. Low- to moderate-risk areas were placed under general community quarantine, which allows partial operations of malls and other establishments offering essential goods and services.
