How to Cop This Runway Smooth Hairstyle Janine Gutierrez Wore to NYFW

When you’re on the hunt for the next big thing in fashion and beauty, there’s no better place to look than during New York Fashion Week. It’s the mecca for future trends, and if you’re one of the first to cop a particular look, all eyes are on you.

Take Janine Gutierrez, for example. For this year’s NYFW, she brought an iconic look back to life: the flip hairstyle. Made popular in the ‘60s, it’s best known for the voluminous outward flip at the ends of your hair. Janine updated the look by giving hers a bit of an edge. Here’s how to recreate her hairstyle:

1. Wash your hair.

Use keratin-based hair products like TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shampoo and Conditioner to help keep your locks frizz-free and smooth even after styling. Remember to massage the shampoo onto your scalp so you can cleanse dirt and oil, and apply conditioner from the mid-length of your hair to the tip for that sleek, straight, and shiny effect.

2. Blow-dry your hair then create a middle part.

Continuously comb your hair backwards as you blow-dry to add volume and smooth out frizz. Use the bridge of your nose as a guide to determine where to part your hair. Once you find it, blow-dry the front parting and hairline. Create a neat center part with your comb and blow-dry upwards using a round brush. Sweeping motions are key while using a blow-dryer on your hair. This will help prevent your hair from being exposed to high temperature for too long and distribute heat more evenly.

3. Straighten hair and create subtle outward flips on each side.

One important element in Janine’s hairstyle is its sleekness. To achieve this, you’ll need to tame your hair with a flat-iron. Do it section by section; when your iron is about an inch or two away from the ends of your hair, curl the iron outward for a few seconds to create the “flip.”

4. Don an Alice headband.

To add more dimension to the look, wear a black Alice headband (yes, like the fictional character) then tuck your hair behind your ears. And make sure the flips remain noticeable!

 5. Set the look.

Mist hairspray on the lengths and ends of your hair to hold the look in place and keep it looking polished.
