Fashion is changing. No one is afraid to share their secrets to success anymore, because the industry is at the most inclusive and supportive that it's ever been. So if you're considering a career in fashion, now is definitely the time to give it a shot, because you might be the one we're waiting for.
And this week, it's all about hair and the art of hairstyling.
Meet Mycke Arcano, a freelance hairstylist and model mentor who has done hair for the likes of Kim Jones, Lovi Poe, and Miss World Philippines 2014 Valerie Weigmann. We asked him for his top five tips for hairstyling newbies who want to make it in the industry and stay relevant, and here's what he had to say:
1. "Never stop learning and trend setting. Experiment and practice is key."
"Hairstyling is all about being unconventional and being playful," he tells us. Continuously hone your skills and don't be afraid to try looks that you won't typically go for, especially at editorial shoots.
2. "Don't be too technical. Some hairstyles are made to be undone and less complicated."
Mycke thinks that newbies want to do really well so they focus on getting their work to be as close to perfect as possible, because that's what they see in the media. They forget that hair in real life isn't too perfect, and hairstyling as a craft must be undaunted and playful.
3. "Build your connections. Image is everything. Look credible but be less nyora and never think too highly of yourself."
Your social media accounts should feature more of your work and less of yourself if you're starting out, because if people want to book you, that's how they can easily decide if you're worth their time. And if you're new, don't let big clients and projects get to your head and just keep working.
4. "Treat work as play too. But always be tact and professional."
Basically don't forget to have fun, be nice, and be respectful to everyone. And never be late!
5. "Make sure you want to do hairstyling not because of the money."
Money can only take you so far, but passion and dedication can earn you longevity in the business, the trust of people the industry, and a deeper sense of self-fulfillment.
6. If you're in a different field but are interested in hairstyling, go for it!
Don't let anything stop you from doing what you love. You will force yourself to learn how to balance your day job and your passion for hair if you're determined. "It would be difficult at first," Mycke admits, "[But] No pain, no gain."
