Power Suited Makeup to match the season's strong-shouldered frocks.

Menswear is one of Fall/Winter '09's best and most commercially successful trends, and when paired with contrasting feminine details, the effect is nothing short of drop-dead gorgeous. The sharpness of the padded shoulders and tailored cuts gives such a deliberate, structured silhouette to the body; tweaking your makeup to complement the fierce '80s vibe—we want more Jerry Hall than all-out Grace Jones, after all—is a bit of a balancing act, but shouldn't be too tricky.

For day, the ideal beauty look for menswear is a matte base, defined black eyeliner (nix the browns—deep, dark kohl is best), and either a matte neutral or an electric-bright lip does it, with textured hair to match.

For evening, take a cue from the muses at Dennis Lustico's gala show who donned futuristic-slick buns and 3D smoky eyes: high-voltage shadow with a sleek updo puts the focus on the neck and shoulder detailing of your power top, and seals the deal on the entire bondage-meets-bombshell ensemble. Update the smoky look by using shades like forest green and navy instead of usual black and gray; major mascara, apricot blush and peachy lips offset the statement eyes and hair.

The look edits even better for the office, with hair that's pulled back into a clean, no-nonsense chignon and monochromatic nudes on the face (think Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct). Different textures—matte on the eyes, creamy on lips, satiny sheer on cheeks—makes it anything but boring and entirely appropriate, whether you're planning to work or play.
