It's not as difficult as it seems!

As a beauty writer, it's my job to try products from basically every brand out there—no matter its place of origin. That said, I do feel the most pride when I wear things made by my fellow Filipinos. So in the spirit of Independence Day, I challenged myself to commit to a purely local beauty routine for an entire week. How did I fare? Scroll through to find out!

SKINCARE

As much as I wanted to explore tons of skincare products for this challenge, it's not exactly the best practice if you have oily and acne-prone skin like I do. Instead, I decided to stick to a specific rotation of products for the entire week. Here's what I used:

1. Makeup Removers: Sanicare Cleansing Wipes, Pink Sugar Our Lil' Secret Makeup Remover

I have yet to find a local cleansing oil that I swear by, so I opted for a two-step routine to remove all my makeup. I start off with Sanicare's Cleansing Wipes, which you might not expect to work to wipe off makeup, but it works! They didn't dry my skin out nor did they feel overly abrasive unlike most face wipes I've tried. For my eye makeup and lipstick, I used a cotton pad soaked with Pink Sugar's micellar water. It does the trick!

2. Cleanser: Human Nature Nourishing Facial Wash

This is actually my favorite drugstore cleanser, and I've been using it for years. It's a gel formula that cleanses well without drying out the skin, making it perfect for oily skin types.

3. Toner: Human Nature Hydration Toner

I mainly use this toner for extra hydration, so I apply it by pouring it on my palms and patting it on. But when I need extra cleansing, I would put this on a cotton pad just to get any excess makeup off without drying out my skin.

4. Morning Moisturizer: Celeteque Hydration Moisturizer

This has been a staple in my skincare drawer since I was in college. I even used it while I was on a skincare diet! It's water-based, lightweight, and hydrating—the perfect base for oily skin in the morning.

5. Sunscreen: Belo SunExpert Face Cover SPF 40 PA+++

Belo's sunscreens are some of my favorite ones locally. This one in particular I love because it has high SPF and has UVA/UVB protection but it's not oily at all.

5. Night Moisturizer: One Earth Organics Rosehip Oil

I'm not much of a face oil fan, though I make the exception for rosehip oil because it's hydrating and helps with my acne scars. I applied four drops of the One Earth Organics one on my palms and then warm the product up by rubbing them for a few seconds. And then, I pat the oil all over my face and neck and do a gentle massage to help it absorb.

MAKEUP

I typically only wear makeup on weekdays and leave my skin bare on the weekends. That said, this means I had five whole days to experiment with local makeup in my collection. While I chose to stick to similar products for brows, and mascara (as I usually would), I switched up my base, eye, and lip routine almost every day. Check out the looks I wore all week below!

Day 1

I used a lot of essentials this day to set the tone for the week. I went for a wearable look with a cat eye and a coral lip. For my base, I went with Happy Skin's On the Glow foundation in Natural Beige. It has medium-coverage and a slightly glowy finish that isn't too tacky on the skin. I then used Sunnies Face's Airblush in Peached for blush, which is quite a sheer formula but the color is really flattering. Speaking of Sunnies, I used the Lifebrow Skinny Pencil in Ash Brown to define my brows all week. If you have sparse brows and like a natural look, this one is a good choice.

For that cat eye, I used a dark brown pencil from Happy Skin's Active range. It stayed on all day and didn't smudge, so I was pleasantly surprised with that. After, I coated my lashes with the brand's mascara, which is also from Kathryn Bernardo's first collection. Lastly, I mixed two shades of the Sunnies Face Fluffmatte lipsticks (Vacay and Hot Sauce) to create a bright coral pout.

Day 2

Since I was attending an event  today, I needed something more full coverage so I used blk's All-Day Matte Liquid Foundation. It has medium to full coverage, a matte finish, and lasts on oily skin! To add some dimension to my cheeks, I applied all the colors from EB Advance's Face Trio in Sunset Trio. This palette has quickly become one of my go-tos because it's has a highlighter, blush, and bronzer in one. The highlighter is my favorite though—it gives such a glassy sheen!

I skipped eyeliner and spent more time on my eyeshadow instead. I combined a reddish brown and orange shade from an EB Advance palette and blended both all over my eyelids and lower lashline. For brows and lashes, I used the same combo from the previous day. As for my lip color, I created another cocktail for a soft gradient lip. I started off with a nude base (also from EB) to neutralize my lip color before patting on the shade Happy Hour (a luminous berry) from Joey and Angie King's collab with Colourette. The latter has quite a hydrating finish so it was a great alternative to lip gloss.

Day 3

Unlike yesterday, I spent humpday doing small errands—A.K.A. going to the grocery and paying bills. My base was quick and easy, using a few dots of the Happy Skin foundation from Monday all over to lightly even out my skin tone. For a quick flush on my cheeks and lips, I went with the cult-favorite Lip and Cheek Stain in Perfect Plum from EB Advance. I'm not usually a fan of tints (I prefer powder), but this was a pleasant surprise. I applied it with a stippling brush, and the gel went on so evenly and didn't disturb my foundation—it's perfect if you're in a rush. And then, instead of highlighter, I set my makeup with a luminizing powder from Skinpotions. I love that it just gave my skin a subtle glow and held my base in place.

Day 4

I had to rush out of the house so for day four, I did the same base routine as day two with a few adjustments. I used the terracotta-hued lip color in Baked by Sunnies Face as blush, eyeshadow, and lipstick to create an easy monochrome look. As I was already using the brand's Lifebrow all week, I figured why not pair it with the matching brow gel this time?

Day 5

For the last makeup day, I figured something minimal would do. After doing my usual brow and mascara routine, I wore the Vice Cosmetics' powder foundation. For me, this one is a great option for evening out your skin tone and maintaining a matte finish without using a liquid product. I like buffing it in with a flat top kabuki brush for higher coverage! Last but not the least, I blended a bright coral shade from blk's K-beauty collection on my cheeks and lips. This color really elevated what's an otherwise very minimal look!

Conclusion

Using only local products for a week wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. The products I chose for this challenge are mostly already in my beauty routine, so I didn't become overwhelmed by the switch. While I do think we have ways to go when it comes to diversifying our base products, especially foundation, I feel that our local skincare and color cosmetics have improved so much throughout the years and I can't wait to see what's next. In fact, I might even do this challenge more often just for fun.
