Nike Running Coach Gives 5 Tips to Get Ready for a Half Marathon A few reminders before the big day.

The big day is just one sleep away! Tomorrow we’re rising extra early to join the 21k half marathon as part of Nike’s Women Victory Tour. We’ve trained. Hard. But if like us, you still don’t consider yourself as a “runner,” then we bet you’re feeling all jittery thinking, “How on earth am I going to be able to finish half marathon??” It’s normal and we’re with you. This is why we asked the only girl in the NRC trio, Coach Ian Banzon, to give us a few reminders before we face game day. Hopefully these expert tips will help.

Coach says:

1. Start hydrating yourself two to three days before.

She recommends 2 to 2.5L of water a day. Don’t skimp up on H2O! After all, you can’t gulp that much during the actual run because it will make you feel heavy. Also, there is no time to pee.

2. Eat a filling dinner with a good mix of carbs and protein the night before the race.

Load up on the right food. At least for this night, stay away from anything extra oily and go for the steamed variety. If you have the option of brown rice, do it.

3. Sleep early!

The gun start on Sunday is at 4:30 AM. To be there an hour before, you need to wake up probably around 2 or 2:30 AM. Six hours of sleep will be ideal so make sure to be tucked in as early as 7:30 or 8:00 PM the night before.

4. Have a light breakfast at least two hours before start time to allow enough time to digest.

Save the full meal for after! Think of it as your reward after hours of melting your fat reserves away.

5. Make sure to have your essentials!

Don’t forget your Nike race tee and your comfy Nike running shoes, of course. Bring a sun visor if you want and don’t forget to put on sunscreen!

Finally, before you start running. Coach Ian suggests to visualize your perfect race as you make your way to the start line.

Ours is this: We will finish the race no matter what it takes because we're #betterforit.

Good luck and see you there, ladies!
