The adage "prevention is better than cure" is true for many things in life, including skincare. This is why former beauty queen Maggie Wilson-Consunji believes people should start investing in skincare as early as the age of 16. PEP.ph had a quick chat with Maggie at the 10th anniversary party of Organique California, and she shares her top skincare tips.
Like many women, Maggie had brushed off the idea of starting a skincare regimen when she was younger because visible signs of aging had yet to show. She reveals that she started taking care of her skin more seriously about five years ago. "I only really started taking care of my skin when I hit 25. And honestly, that's too late. I should have started when I was 18 or even 16 because, you know, matigas ulo, and I didn't really listen to my mom until I was 25," she says.
According to studies, signs of skin aging—such as fine lines, loss of volume, and loss of skin elasticity—start to manifest as early as age 25. To fight these skin problems, Maggie makes sure to regularly visit her dermatologist. The Casa Consunji founder says, "Now, I visit my dermatologist regularly. At least twice a month, just to do facials and non-invasive lifting procedures."
When it comes to her daily skin-care routine, Maggie keeps it simple. "I also have my day and night routine at home. Just your normal routine, wash your face, tone or moisturize, and that's it," she says. She adds that she avoids anything sticky, too, and prefers water-based products because of our country's humid weather. Maggie also stressed in her blog that she is not into "whitening creams and products since I love my morena skin."
That said, there is one step in her skin-care regimen that she never skips, and it's also her anti-aging secret. She tells Pep, "I always put sunblock 'cause I'm always in the sun. And sunblock is also a great anti-aging moisturizer. Even if you don't wear moistuizer, but you have your sunblock on, you're good. You're golden."
Maggie once wrote about the eight of the skin-care products she loves and always uses on her blog. See them below!
1. Glossier Invisible Shield SPF 35
This clear gel, which has a citrusy scent (thank to the sweet orange essential oil!), protects her skin from the sun's UVA/UVB rays and pollution. It has no alcohol or greasy ingredients, and it is an antioxidant complex packed with Vitamin E, Vitamin P, broccoli, and aloe leaf extracts that helps neutralize free radicals inside skin.

2. Mario Badescu Acne Facial Cleanser
To cleanse her face, she uses this "incredibly gentle" cleanser twice a day. Formulated with acne-fighting salicylic acid, chamomile, and aloe vera, it's a great fit for oily and acne-prone skin types.

3. La Mer Moisturizing Soft Cream
A lot of celebrities swear by this weightless moisturizer, which is great for those with combination and dry skin.

4. Olay Regenerist Whip
In an Instagram post, Maggie writes, "When the weather is this humid using the right moisturiser is vital! When the product is too thick and heavy, I tend to breakout so I really need a super light weight moisturiser that helps mattify my skin but also keeps it hydrated! I’m firm believer in always trying new products because you never know if the next one works even more amazingly well with your skin!"

5. Shu Uemura Anti/Oxi+ Pollutant & Dullness Clarifying Cleansing Oil
Maggie never goes to bed with her makeup on, and her top-of-mind choice when removing all traces of products, including the micro-sized impurities, on her face is this "anti-pollutant" cleansing oil.

6. La Mer The Eye Concentrate
To avoid crow's feet and wrinkles on the eye area, which is extra sensitive, the former actress turns to this cream, which significantly reduces the appearance of dark circles, lines, and wrinkles.

7. Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum
"There must be magic in this bottle. I don’t skip this step of my skincare routine simply because it does wonders for my skin. I put this on before going to bed, and in the morning, I wake up super refreshed and renewed," Maggie writes in her blog post.

8. Biotherm Life Plankton Mask
She alternates between the Estée Lauder serum and this mask from Biotherm to maximize their effects. "This also has great healing and renewing properties that makes my skin look very good when I wake up," she says.

Maggie's goal, aside from preventing skin problems, is to have a glowing skin even without makeup. As you can see on her Instagram feed, she loves going to the beach, bare-faced. But before buying any skincare products, she suggests trying and testing them first. She writes, "Always ask for samples when you visit beauty kiosks. Don’t buy a product outright if you’re not sure about it. Trying the samples can help you better decide if the product is a good fit."
