The challenge of finding the perfect nude lipstick is nothing compared to the search for the perfect red. Since this hue tends to be bolder and more in-your-face, it's tougher to camouflage an imperfect match. But don't worry, finding a flattering red for your skin tone is simple if you know your tones. So for those on the morena side of the skin spectrum, here's a three-step guide to help you find "the one":
1. Figure out what kind of reds you prefer.
Similar to choosing nude lipstick, we all have shades of red that we gravitate towards. You may be more of an orange-red girl, a blue-red type, or a pink-red junkie. For example, if you have a warmer undertone, you may find orange-reds more in tune with your skin color. Or, perhaps you tend to fall for a universal favorite, like a Ruby Woo-esque shade (blue-red). Not sure how to find out what you like? Try swatching red lippies in stores or finding inspiration from bloggers and celebs with the same skin tone.
2. Find a variation that works best with your skin tone.
This one is unfortunately trial-and-error, but knowing your undertones (warm, cool, neutral) will help you tremendously. Once you pick your favorite type of red, research on products that come in the same undertones as your skin to avoid the two from clashing. However, we do recommend neutral-toned reds since they're typically the most universally flattering!
3. Master that application.
Putting on a red lip can be as challenging as taking on a dark purple, so knowing the right way to swipe on that rouge is extremely important. Using a lip liner before the lipstick, for one, will help you create more precise lines to avoid feathering. Also, since a red lip can make your face look bottom-heavy, don't forget to define your eyebrows and lashes to balance everything out. Click the story below for more tips!
