Looking good may be part of a celebrity's job description, but as every star inevitably has to learn, there's danger in letting that consume you. With social media increasing that pressure tenfold, it's often up to the celebrities themselves to stand up to these unrealistic expectations.
At only 19 years old, Kyline Alcantara has already pushed herself to grow out of maintaining a "perfect" image online and off. In an interview with Preview, she reveals that she consciously changed the way she posts to show a more authentic version of herself.
"Dati, [my posts had a] filter on top of another filter, and on top of another filter, on top of another editing. Like hindi ako proud ipakita sarili ko especially 'yung time na napakarami ko pang pimples," the actress tells us.
ICYMI, Kyline opened up about her experience with severe acne back in 2019 but she has since recovered from it after consulting with an expert.
Changing her perspective about makeup helped, too, and being the newest face of Ever Bilena made embracing it a breeze. "Before, I considered makeup as concealing every flaw at kung ano mang nasa face ko but right now I consider makeup as enchancing every flaw and imperfection that I have," shares the actress. After all, breakouts, dark circles, and imperfections are completely normal. "Hindi maalis 'yun sa buhay natin," she adds.
In a press conference for the brand, Kyline revealed that now, she can survive with just powder foundation, a multi-use tint, and mascara in her makeup bag. (She swears by EB's Two Way Cake and Lip & Cheek Stain, by the way!)
Kyline has also found being more raw elicits more positive responses from her followers. She explains, "Mas naappreciate ng mga tao kapag napapakita mo talaga yung totoong ikaw sa kanila, like walang parang cover sa mukha mo or sa personality mo."
That's why even if it wasn't easy for her to become more candid on her platforms at first, she persisted. And this was despite the negative comments she was constantly receiving about her looks.
"They always say na artista ka bakit ganyan skin mo, dapat role model ka sa mga tao," the actress shares. "Like, why are you guys expecting me to be perfect? Bakit ineexpect ng mga taong [dahil] artista ka you always need to be perfect you always need to be ready every single time? And yes, it's our job but we're humans, too."
Eventually, Kyline says she just realized that the comments will never stop, so they shouldn't dictate how she presents herself. "Narealize ko rin po na may masasabi at masasabi talaga lahat may gawin ka mang tama o mali. So just live your freaking life," she tells us with a smile.
