One would think that experimenting with makeup and rocking a minimal face are two entirely different things, but that's definitely not the case—and Kathryn Bernardo is living proof of that. The actress has continously proven that her affinity for effortless glam can't stop her from pulling off different beauty looks—in fact, it's how she makes even the boldest trends work in her favor. Need tips? Scroll through some of her signature looks below!
1. "No-makeup" makeup
When she isn't with her glam team, Kathryn's go-to face revolves around the perfect MLBB lip color to instantly perk up her complexion. Everything else is already optional, but the actress likes to complete her barely-there looks with a little bit of a rosy cheek tint for a healthy flush, plus a few pinches of eyelash curler to wake up her peepers.
2. Fresh glam
Being on camera calls for a more amplified version of Kathryn's usual effortless glam. The key to this look is an almost invisible base with a natural-looking sheen, which you recreate with a sheer, skin-like foundation, cream blush, and a pop of cream highlighter on the highest points of the face. To define your eyes subtly, smudge some brown eyeliner or eyeshadow as close to your lashline as possible and keep your mascara clump-free (click here for a quick tutorial).
3. Glassy and glossy
As much as we all love a simple "glass skin" look, it never hurts to hit the upgrade button on it every so often. Take this look for example, where Kathryn leveled up her glow by adding a sheer layer of glitter to the center of her eyelids that'll catch the light when she blinks. Then there's her lip gloss-topped pout, which has two kinds of lip colors underneath for a natural gradient effect.
4. Stained red lip
During her travels, Kathryn keeps her glam natural yet photo-ready with a statement lip. One of her go-to products is a watery tint with a strong red hue, which she appears to apply several layers of to achieve a vibrant color payoff that looks striking in her snapshots.
5. A hint of sparkle
The trick to effortlessly pulling off shimmer is to choose where you'll apply it. In Kathryn's case, she often chooses to keep the glitter on her eyes—be it with some bronze eyeshadow on her lids or a pop of brightness on her inner corners when she's wearing a light smoky eye.
Monochrome makeup takes all the guesswork out of choosing the right colors for your eyes, lips, and cheeks while still helping you achieve a polished face. Take cues from the actress and go for muted tones like a rose brown if you're attending a meeting or a formal event, and opt for vibrant hues like orange or peach if you want something fun yet still wearable.
7. Glossy lids
Repurposing your cream blush as eyeshadow is one of the easiest ways to add some color on your lids. Instead of just stopping there though, why not give your eyes some glitter-free shine by topping the color off with some gloss? If you don't have an eye gloss, patting on some petroleum jelly or lip balm can do the trick, too!
8. Electric wing
Some may think it's cheesy, but matching your makeup with your outfit is one of those styling tricks that just guarantees success. One of our favorite examples of this is when Kathryn honored our Preview Best Dresed 2019 theme, color, with a bright orange suit and an electric-hued winged eye. A statement wing like this is best paired with a muted lip, such as the pretty peachy nude she's wearing in this shot.
9. Negative space
Too lazy to do a draw a full-on cat eye? Cut the work in half (literally) by skipping everything else but the wing. This is called negative space liner—a cool, editorial take on the usual wing that celebrities like Lily Collins and Emma Watson have rocked on the red carpet.
10. Just-bitten lips
Kathryn's signature blurred lip helps her transform just about any lipstick shade into a wearable color. Here's how you can do it: Apply your chosen color all over your lips, and then with your finger or a lip brush, gently blend out the outer edges to get rid of any harsh lines. While doing this, make sure you don't go beyond your natural lip line so the end result doesn't end up looking messy!
11. Beach bronze
Enhancing your tan with makeup is all about letting your natural skin show and choosing the right colors. If you can, skip the foundation entirely like Kath and just cover imperfections with concealer. From there, choose a highlighter with a bronze or golden tone to amp up your natural glow. Anything that's too light or too pink will look too stark. For blush, the actress prefers a muted berry tone since it mimics the skin's natural flush. Swipe it across your nose for a fresh-off-the-beach effect!
