...and it actually makes a lot of sense.

There's a new beauty guru in town, and it's not someone you'd expect. John Mayer, yes, the John Mayer, debuted his makeup skills via a smokey eye tutorial on Instagram, and it was both unbelievable and, dare we say, impressive.

It starts with John's introduction while holding an eyeshadow palette from Chanel. "I started buying Chanel makeup just for the colors," he says. The palette had basically every color required for a smokey eye—a light base, a copper, and two dark colors. A good choice, if you ask us.

John then proceeds to talk about makeup tools, or the lack thereof. "You see a lot of tutorials showing you what brushes you need to have, like blending brushes and stuff, but I believe all you need are the ones that come with [the palette]," he continues, holding up two sponge tip applicators to prove his point.

He begins the makeup tutorial by creating a light brown base color all over his eyelid. "This is where guys get it wrong. They go too heavy," he notes, probably referring to how people usually go for the black on first application. And he's right, because a clean smokey eye does need a good first layer!

The next step involves the smokey color itself, a.k.a. the real challenge. Dipping into the palette's darkest shade, John sculpts the outer corners of his eyes, tracing his eyeball. "Remember your eyeball is round. You want to accentuate the roundness of your eyeball," explains the singer. And then, noticing how dark the makeup was becoming, he reminds everyone that he will blend all the harsh lines out. Take note, ladies and gents!

The latter part contains probably the best tip from the entire tutorial, because it's definitely a common struggle. He talks about the orbital socket, the part where one should stop applying eyeshadow. And we agree with him on this, since a smokey eye should stop right below the browbone to look soft and diffused.

The finished look was not perfect, but it was definitely smokey. "Oh, I'm sorry, did somebody nail it? No, they didn't, but they came close and that's what matters," he jokes.

Sure, the entire tutorial might just seem like a random funny video to some. Still, makeup is supposed to be fun, and this is proof that you can have fun with makeup no matter who you are. "Do you want to be the type of person that stares at eyeshadow that's completely unused for like a week straight and doesn't want to try it themselves?" No, we don't, John. We definitely don't.
