Despite being in one of the most looks-focused industries in the world, Jodi Sta. Maria has grown to have an introspective approach to beauty. At 39, the actress has fully embrace that it's not just skin-deep, and is making it her mission to spread the message.
"I think beauty really starts from within," she says in a virtual press conference for Estée Lauder. "It's about loving yourself, being true to yourself, and accepting yourself for you who are. Beauty is also how we treat those around us, how we make people feel."
And if Jodi is any indication, embracing this philosophy can do absolute wonders for your self-confidence. One quick example is that she can easily talk about the lines on her face and brush it off as "normal and natural." Her skincare is anything but complicated, too, because she sticks to techniques and products that make her feel as good as they make her look. That's why while we had her within virtual reach, we couldn't help asking the actress for other practical beauty advice.
Ahead, Jodi Sta. Maria shares the top three skincare tips she has for other women, especially those thriving in their 30s:
1. Don't sleep with your makeup still on.
Since her job entails wearing makeup for hours on end, Jodi knows how leaving it on (read: forgetting to take it off) affects our skin. "Don't sleep with your makeup on," she stresses. "Kasi number one, it makes your skin [oilier], and then what happens is the makeup blocks your pores—doon nags-start yung acne, pimples, etc."
Following Jodi's advice, the best way to remove your makeup would be to double cleanse. Use a micellar water, cleansing oil, or a cleansing balm to melt off the first layer of your makeup, and then wash off the leftover oil and other debris with a regular face wash. You'd be done in less than three minutes!
2. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.
Jodi considers hydration as the "cheapest" thing you can add to your skincare routine. She shares that she herself drinks more than a liter and a half of water a day, and it does wonders for her health, too. "It really flushes out everything that I don't need in my body and it keeps my body hydrated. So water is very important, so powerful," she explains.
If you need help amping up your water intake, try downloading apps that will remind you to drink up. Or, you can switch your small water bottle for a bigger one so you're encouraged to drink more!
3. Use tried and tested products.
Choosing skincare products can be daunting at any age, but if you aren't sure, you can't go wrong with trying everyone else's tried and true. "Use products that are trusted by many, have good credentials, and that have been there for years," Jodi suggests. "They will never be in the market for so long if hindi nagw-work yung product na 'yan."
One product Jodi herself swears by is the best-selling Advanced Night Repair serum from Estée Lauder. The actress calls it her "beauty sleep in a bottle," but admits she uses it both day and night. "I would get comments like, 'ang fresh mo today' [when I use it]," she shares. Jodi's other must-haves include a hydrating essence (she loves the brand's Micro Essence) and a hyaluronic acid-infused serum for instant plumping! Another bonus tip for product hunting? Ask your friends and tell them about your favorites, too! Jodi says, "When you found something na nakatulong sayo, isn't it good it be sharing it with other people?" We totally agree, Jodi!
