It affects your appearance and well-being more than you realize.

At a recent launch for Dermalogica’s newest product, Sound Sleep Cocoon, we were treated to a brief but insightful lecture on the pillars of wellness. Conducted by certified wellness coaches Dr. Willie Lagdameo (a pediatric surgeon and Dr. Sears certified wellness coach) and his wife May M. Lagdameo (certified integrative nutrition health coach, certified holistic cancer wellness coach, stress management coach), we immediately zeroed in on the importance of getting a deep and restful sleep every night.

“Stress is a way of life, and it is simply [about] how we manage it,” says Dr. Willie. May adds that getting the right amount of rest affects our weight: “When we get enough quality sleep, there’s a hormone called leptin that is produced by our body, and that causes us to feel satisfied.” According to Dr. Josh Axe, certified doctor of natural medicine and clinical nutritionist, leptin gives a feeling of satiety that helps control the appetite. "On the other hand, when you lack sleep and you’re not well rested, the hormone ghrelin is produced by the body,” adds May. "It’s the hunger hormone. Observe yourselves: When you have not had enough sleep, the following morning, you crave. You want to eat and eat and eat and eat."

Sleep, and the lack thereof, also has an effect on our overall mental and physical health. May explains that our bodies are like our gadgets that need to be rebooted or restarted from time to time. In the case of humans, we need this refresh every night.

For skin care brand Dermalogica, research has shown that sleep should be an integral part of your nightly beauty regimen to help skin recover from the day’s stressors. Dull skin, fine lines, dark circles, and early signs of aging can result from regular sleep deprivation.

This is why they introduced a new addition to your evening routine: the Sound Sleep Cocoon Transformative Night Gel Cream (P4250, Rustans), which is meant to be applied over your face and neck after your moisturizer. It takes advantage of the regenerative process skin goes through while you sleep by delivering actives to help transform it—Persian silk tree bark extract helps to reduce signs of fatigue and restore vitality, fruits of Wu-Zhu (in traditional Chinese medicine) extract to refine skin's texture, Kakadu plum extract that has vitamin C to promote brightening, and tamarind seed extract whose polysaccharide nourishes and cushions skin. The formula contains motion-activated essential oils (French lavender oil, sandalwood, and patchouli) that soothe your senses with aromatherapy even as you toss and turn in bed.

So how can we make sure we get quality sleep every night? Here are some tips from Dr. Willie and May.

"Have a fixed bed time and waking time"

Make sure you get between 7 to 9 hours of restful sleep every day by going to sleep and waking up at around the same time every day, even on weekends.

"Develop a relaxing bedtime routine.”

Start winding down an hour before your set bed time with a calming routine: take a warm bath, go through your beauty regimen, and even read a book

“Exercise! You’ll be surprised by how science has proven that exercise is essential to be able to sleep well."

According to sleep.org, the connection between physical activity and sleep quality is in how the former helps to reduce stress and tire the body—the body’s temperature rises when you are active and the drop after causes you to become sleepy later on.

"It is also important to evaluate your bedroom.”

Survey your resting space by asking these questions: Is the color restful? Are the contents messy and distracting? Can you dim the lights to promote the release of melatonin in your body? Is it noisy?

"One of the tools also to achieve a deep and restful sleep is a comfortable bed and pillows.”

May reveals that a good bed can last anywhere from eight to 12 years before you need to change it. It’s important to consider how you sleep, whether supine, on your belly or on your side, and to make sure that the mattress supports your spine regardless of how firm or soft you prefer it to be.
