Managing your oily skin is totally possible and don't let your pores tell you otherwise! The first step, of course, is to find the right combination of skincare products for your skin type, and you'll eventually see the results. If you need some help, keep these tips from beauty expert and YouTuber Susan Yara in mind:
1. Remove your makeup thoroughly.
Only using one face wash to remove your makeup is rarely enough. Chances are, there would still be leftover product and oil on your skin, which could cause breakouts. Double cleansing (using a makeup remover + a face wash) can help with this, because not only would it break down all the buildup of dirt you've accumulated during the day, it'll fully prep your skin for other products, too. For oily skin, try a light cleansing oil or micellar water to melt makeup off followed by a gentle pH-balanced cleanser.
2. Use a treatment cleanser.
Treatment cleansers are basically those that have a low percentage of exfoliating acids, which help lightly exfoliate your face as you wash it. You can leave this type of cleanser on for a minute or two (build your tolerance slowly!) so it can do its job—like an exfoliating mask, so to speak. Try one with salicylic acid (check out our favorites here) in your night time routine for some pore-cleaning action!
3. Avoid drying your skin out.
Oily skin is already naturally dehydrated, so the last thing you want to do is dry it out further. Because if you do, your skin would just try to compensate by becoming even oilier—and no one wants that. When selecting your skincare products, choose ones that would give you lightweight hydration (oil-free moisturizers, hydrating toners) and avoid drying products (alcohol-based toners, peel-off masks).
4. Use retinol.
Retinol is the gold standard ingredient for anti-aging. That said, this ingredient is also amazing for balancing oil production and keeping your pores clean by encouraging quicker cell turnover. Add it to your night time skincare routine and apply it while your skin is still slightly damp from your toner. (Read our beginner's guide to retinol here!)
5. Always moisturize.
Some people with oily skin tend to skip moisturizer in fear that it would make them even oilier—but that's definitely not the case. In fact, your face actually needs that extra hydration to become balanced. The trick is to stick to non-greasy formulas like gel moisturizers that absorb easily into the skin instead of leaving an oily film. If putting it on all your face feels too much, you can also try applying it only on certain areas that you think need the extra slip.
