When your eyes need more than a coat of mascara to look alive, don't hesitate to reach for some eyeliner. You'll be surprised how it can define your eyes in ways mascara can't, and you won't even need to draw a wing! In fact, you can skip black and opt for a softer hue instead. Our pick? Brown eyeliner!
According to makeup artist Jyka Espinoza, "[Brown] is softer and a lot more subtle than the classic black [liner], so I don’t have to worry about it being too harsh." This is the same reason why brown eyeshadow works best for no-makeup looks as well, since the shade can naturally mimic the shadows around our eyes. When applied well, you can create a "no-liner" liner look!
The easiest way to use brown eyeliner would be in pencil form, drawn and smudged over your lashline. "I use Zoeva's Smudger Brush (P486, Sephora.ph) [to] softly blend the liner until you can’t see where it starts and ends," Jyka explains. But if you're in a rush, she adds that smudging it with your fingers also does the trick!

Got oily eyelids? Opt for a waterproof gel formula instead of a pencil. Just make sure to smudge the liner before the gel sets!

Liquid liner can also give you barely-there definition, but you have to apply it differently. Instead of drawing a thin line on your eyes, use the tip of the pen or brush to create small dots in-between your lashes. This will fill in any gaps and create the illusion of fuller lashes!
