So exactly how long do you need to wait for your eye cream to take effect?

Waiting for an anti-aging product to work can take forever—or at least, that's what it feels like.

With concealers, foundations, or even moisturizers, you can immediately tell whether the product works for your skin or not. Unfortunately, that's not how it goes with age-defying skincare. Something that's meant to treat the fine lines around your eyes or the dark spots on your cheeks will obviously take quite some time for it to kick in. But have you ever wondered how long should you exactly wait before you conclude that a product isn't just for you?

Generally, "it takes about 28 days for skin cells to turn over, which means that almost all products require at least one month of use before you’ll see results," Style Caster reports. This explains why anti-aging products take the longest to take effect! But for a deeper look at how long certain anti-aging products work, take note of these various "waiting periods" below:

Eye Creams

Wait for: six to eight weeks

When it comes to eye creams, the results will depend on the active ingredients they contain. For instance, eye creams that are infused with skin hydrators like hyaluronic acid will quickly create a plumping effect, whereas those that have longer-term active ingredients like retinoids (think: vitamin A) or antioxidants (vitamins C and E) will show wrinkle-reducing results for "about four to six weeks of regular use," explains Adore Beauty.

Vitamin C-infused serums

Wait for: four to six weeks

Vitamin C is a common ingredient found in many anti-aging serums. It's known to improve one's overall complexion by boosting collagen production and lightening acne scars. But because it will have to "change [your skin] on a [deeper] cellular level, expect to wait at least three months to see a benefit," explains cosmetic doctor David Jack with Refinery 29. Plus, it takes regular application for you to see results, so don't give up on that vitamin C-infused serum just yet!

Face creams

Wait for: at least one week for its moisturizing effect and four weeks for its long-term, anti-aging benefits

Like eye creams, not all anti-aging face creams work the same way. "There are two categories of products out there: ones that actually treat and prevent wrinkles, and others that just minimize their appearance,” Pennsylvania-based board-certified dermatologist Erum Ilyas, MD tells Prevention, so it's best to know where your face cream falls under to help manage your expectations.

Ilyas further explains that products that treat fine lines contain hardcore anti-aging ingredients like retinol, while those that simply minimize have hydrators like hyaluronic acid or peptides that make the skin appear temporarily plumper. This makes the latter ideal for those who need instant results, especially if they've got a wedding or other major events to attend to.
