Skin type is not exactly something we automatically consider when picking a highlighter, but truth be told, it's more important than it seems. For example, if you have acne, acne scars, and closed comedones, using a highlighter with tons of glitter can make your skin texture look worse than it actually is. So take our advice: Avoid those chunky highlights entirely and stick to products that will give your skin a soft and natural sheen.
That said, you might want to consider changing the way you apply highlighter as well, since too much glow isn't recommended for textured skin. Ideally, you should only apply highlight above your cheekbones, brow bone, and cupid's bow. Your cheek, chin, and nose areas usually have the most texture from scarring and breakouts, so you're going to want to keep those as matte and flat as possible.
To help you out, we narrowed down a few products those with acne-prone skin shouldn't be afraid of wearing. Check out our tried-and-tested picks below:
MAC Strobe Cream in Goldlite, P2300, SM Makati
The golden glow this cream gives is intense. But when applied under foundation, it's subtle enough not to make imperfections more obvious. Since it's a silky cream, it won't cling to any dry patches either!
IMAGE Happy Skin
HAPPY SKIN Yes, I Dew! Fresh Glow Highlighter Pen In Pearl, P899, TriNoma
The natural sheen that this highlighter leaves on the cheekbones is super dreamy. Our favorite thing about it, however, is that it doesn't disturb the coverage of foundation underneath when you blend it out.
BENEFIT Dandelion Shy Beam Liquid Highlighter, P1600, Beautymnl
Matte highlighters exist, and they're super useful for when you're breaking out. This one even comes in a nude pink hue, so skipping blush is totally an option.
LAURA MERCIER Matte Radiance Baked Powder in Highlight 01, P1850, Rustan's
This powder's name doesn't lie. It gives the skin a glitter-free radiance that won't make the complexion look neither bumpy nor dry.
BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector Liquid Highlighter in Opal, P2077, Sephora.ph
On oily, textured skin, this blinding highlighter is best applied before the rest of your makeup for that lit-from-within glow. You can even mix it with your foundation for some coverage!
FENTY BEAUTY Match Stix Matte Skinstick in Linen, P1450, Sephora.ph
For a true matte highlight, draw a few stripes of this over the usual areas. It has a bit of coverage as well, so it can conceal while making an area of your face pop.
HOURGLASS Ambient Lighting Powder, P2900, Sephora.ph
This compact is an Instagram filter on-the-go. Dust it over your skin for a slight blurring effect plus a barely-there highlight that won't look like makeup.
