When a beauty product is being raved about by almost the entire beauty community on TikTok, you just know that it has to be that good. Case in point: This oil control roller has recently been making the rounds on beauty TikTok, a.k.a “BeautyTok,” because of its magical effect on oily skin.
The oil control roller's ball is a volcanic stone that promises to mattify your face, especially when it tends to get oily mid-day. All you have to do is swipe it on your T-zone, cheeks, or wherever you feel the need to blot the skin. It instantly cancels out the oil so you don’t need to keep retouching your makeup or bringing oil control films everywhere you go.
You might be wondering, “It’s just a tiny ball, what’s there to it that helps with oily skin?” That was the question we asked ourselves, too, so we did a little bit of research.
Apparently, volcanic stones are generally good for the skin. According to cosmetic chemist Ginger King, “Volcanic stones have little pockets of porous holes to trap oils” — that’s why these tiny roller balls work like magic. There’s no actual powder tucked inside the roller, it’s just really the stone that soaks up all excess sebum, making it helpful for those with oily and acne-prone skin.
