Here’s a gentle reminder: There is nothing wrong with aging. We’re bound to get loose skin, fine lines, and wrinkles, and there is nothing more natural than that. But what we can do is give our skin the best TLC it deserves, so we can let it age as gracefully as possible.

Vitamin A, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), and glycolic acid are all common ingredients used to address signs of premature aging. Although they work wonders, they’re also known to irritate the skin. Luckily, they aren’t the end-all, be-all ingredients. We found five gentle alternatives that are just as effective at improving your skin without irritating it.

SHOP: 5 Gentle Anti-Aging Ingredients That Won’t Irritate Your Skin

1. Bakuchiol

This all-natural, plant-derived ingredient is native to Asian countries, and was originally used in traditional Chinese medicine to heal wounded and irritated skin. Skincare experts recently discovered its ability to stimulate collagen production and encourage faster cell turnover. Because of that, it’s becoming increasingly popular as an effective anti-aging ingredient that’s gentle enough not to cause irritations.

    2. Niacinamide

Niacinamide or Vitamin B3 is well-known for its ability to reduce enlarged pores, but it’s got a whole list of other benefits, too. From strengthening the skin barrier to lightening hyperpigmentation, toning down redness, and increasing the skin’s ability to retain moisture, niacinamide is a must-have in skincare kits.

      3. Azelaic Acid

Azelaic acid is a naturally occurring acid that acts as a gentle exfoliator. Unlike other acids such as AHAs and BHAs, azelaic acid doesn't irritate the skin. Some of its benefits include reducing dark spots and blemishes, and protecting the skin from other environmental stressors, all while making sure it doesn't strip the skin of its moisture. It’s highly recommended for people with sensitive, dry, and acne-prone skin.

        4. Rosehip Oil

Face oils aren’t just used for their calming and moisturizing effects. Rosehip oil contains carotenoids that help your skin create new and healthier cells for brighter, clearer skin. It also contains Vitamin F, which keeps your skin from being dehydrated. Although it contains trans-retinoic acid—the same ingredient used to create retinol—it isn’t considered a retinoid. Rather, you get the same benefits of retinol without having to worry about purging and irritation.

          5. Sea Buckthorn Oil

Dubbed the “holy fruit” of the Himalayas, sea buckthorn oil is a popular Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine. It’s rich in antioxidants, carotenoids, vitamin E, and vitamin K that help promote the renewal of your skin, reduce inflammation, and protect the skin barrier, while giving your skin a huge dose of hydration.
