If you belong to the majority of women who fill in their sparse brows every single day, then you'll be pleased to know that there's actually a solution to your beauty woe. How to grow back your overplucked brows? This can easily be achieved through a hair transplant.
MAXiM Hair Restoration is a 13-year-old clinic established in New York City. It opened in Manila back in 2004 and has since been known to offer hair transplant procedures. FYI, it doesn't just cater to thinning hair; they also offer eyebrow restoration. Preview chatted with MAXiM Hair Restoration CEO Mac Fadra, along with their in-house doctor, John Ocampo, who specializes in pain management and plastic surgery, to tell us what you should expect when you get an eyebrow restoration procedure. We have everything you need to know below.
What is eyebrow restoration?
Called the Ultra-Natural Eyebrow Transplant, the procedure is done by removing individual hairs from your own head then transplanting them to the eyebrow. Mac explains, "It's actually easier [compared to head hair transplants] but it's more tedious and they have to be very careful to implant the hair at the right angles. Otherwise, it's gonna grow in different ways."
What's the procedure like?
According to MAXiM's site, the eyebrow transplant involves "moving either individual groups or a strip of skin with active follicles from one area of the body (donor site) to another (harvesting site). The back of the head is the most common donor site. The follicles are then trimmed to fit the preferred brow shape and transplanted into the brow area."
After outlining your desired eyebrow shape, the hair follicles are then properly angled to ensure that the hair will grow in the desired direction. Ideally, the hair should resemble the pattern of a feather. To achieve this, the site emphasizes that "the hair in the upper part of the central edge of a normal eyebrow usually points upward to the hairline, while the hair on the lateral aspects point horizontally, towards the ears. The hair in the upper part of the eyebrow should be pointed slightly downward and the lower portion slightly upward, so that they will converge in the middle, forming a slight ridge, which in aesthetic terms, resembles the pattern of a feather."
What kind of procedure should you opt and how much is it?
MAXiM's Manila Branch Manager Mar Sabillo shares that the clinic offers employs the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) that starts at P125,000 for eyebrow transplants since you don't need too many hair grafts on your brows. FUE is an advanced no-stitch hair transplant technique that will only take roughly two hours to do.
Will I have scars on the head and eyebrows?
Mac shares, "We don't take a big strip on the back. We generally go behind the ear so your scar is almost invisible. But on the eyebrows, you're not going to have scars because we use very fine needles to plant the hair."
How long is the recovery time and will you need to go under anesthesia?
Local anesthesia is applied on the areas that the surgeon will work on. You'll feel little to no discomfort during and after the procedure. In fact, you can already go back to work the following day. Dr. John says the healing time takes one to two weeks but you'll see hair growth within a month. "Keep in mind that you always have to groom your eyebrow because the hair will grow longer since the hair grafts were taken from your head. So you have to have it trimmed every now and then," he notes.
What should you do after the procedure?
Right after, you are expected to gently clean the area at least three times a day after surgery, and twice a day for a week. The doctor will also perscribe you an antibiotic ointment that will help soften the scabbing. Additonally, bruising after the surgery is common and it may take a week or more to resolve.
