Take a deep dive into everyone's favorite nostalgic summer scent.

Anyone who was around in the early 2000s would know at least one person who wore Dolce & Gabbana's Light Blue. Even if you never owned it, you likely know what it smells like—its summery blast of citrus is simply unmistakable. It's just one of those scents that work perfectly for the Philippines' sweltering temps, never turning acrid even on the hottest summer day. In fact, the hotter it gets, the more we welcome its freshness. It's no wonder that it remains the brand's best-seller a whole two decades after its release. But what is Light Blue exactly and why is it so popular? Keep scrolling for some for answers.

What Is Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue?

Light Blue is a fragrance for women that was launched in 2001. The scent was inspired by sunny summers in Sicily, described by the brand as a "lively, fresh, floral and fruity fragrance that evokes the sensuality of the Mediterranean woman." With that description, it's no surprise that it eventually became one of the brand's most popular scents, if not their most famous. It was such a hit that Dolce & Gabbana eventually released more versions of it specifically for men, plus an eau de parfum flanker for women.

Next to the scent itself, one thing that makes Light Blue recognizable is its bottle. According to the brand, the light blue cap represents the clear skies in the Mediterranean landscape, while its sturdy, rectangular glass bottle evokes the strength of the modern woman.

What does Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue smell like?

Light Blue is a blend by perfumer Olivier Cresp, whose other renowned work include Mugler's Angel and Yves Saint Laurent's Black Opium. Unlike the two, however, the D&G scent is a summer fragrance through and through, and you'll know it from the first spritz.

It opens with the vibrance of apple (and maybe some lemon, if our noses detect it right), blending seamless with woody Sicilian cedar and a touch of bluebell. Its heart notes are bamboo, jasmine, and white rose, preserving the freshness with a punch of delicate florals. Last but not the least, Light Blue's base is a fusion of citron wood, amber, and light musk.

The original Light Blue (and the one still in shelves today) is an Eau de Toilette, meaning it has between five to 15 percent of the fragrance oil in it. EDT scents are projected to last around two to three hours, which makes Light Blue an easy, summer scent that you can't overapply.

What are the other versions of Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue?

1. Light Blue Pour Homme Eau de Toilette

Six years after the launch of the Light Blue for women, Dolce & Gabbana dropped its Pour Homme. It's made for the quintessential D&G man, described as someone "sensual and modern who likes to take care of himself." Like the original, it's fresh and citrusy, but with a spicy twist. It's a greener, more citrusy take on the Light Blue, with top notes like Sicilian mandarin, grapefruit, and juniper. The whiff of spice comes from Sichuan pepper and rosemary, with a sensual blend of musk, incense, and oak moss at its base.

2. Light Blue Eau Intense Eau de Parfum

Part of the Light Blue's appeal is that it's a no-frills spritz, but we don't blame fans of the scent for clamoring for an Eau de Parfum. That's exactly what they got in 2017, with the release of the Light Blue Eau Intense. Compared to the original, this blend lets the floral notes shine, dialing down the zestiness of citrus. The brand also tapped Olivier Cresp for this version to stay true to the Light Blue's heart.

3. Light Blue Pour Homme Eau Intense Eau de Parfum

Dolce & Gabbana launched the Eau Intense for men in the same year. It was made by Alberto Morillas, the perfumer behind Calvin Klein's CK One and Marc Jacobs' Daisy. He preserved the 2007 Pour Homme's spirit, replacing the spice with an aquatic heart and giving an intensified vibrance to amber wood and musk.
