Can't get enough of ash blonde? Try these darker hues!

There’s no denying that ash blonde is one of the most stylish hair colors anyone can get. But if you’re not into the platinum side of the spectrum, may we suggest a more subtle shade of ash that’s just as flattering?

When you think of ash blonde, you immediately think of light yellowish tones and grays, but you can also opt for warmer (or even cooler) hues that play closer to browns. These colors are perfect if you’re looking for something more natural but still strikingly stylish.

Be wary though, even when you’ve opted for a darker ash dye job doesn’t mean you won’t need to bleach your tresses. Any ash tone requires pre-lightening for even the subtlest tinge of gray to peek through. The upside to a more natural-looking ash blonde is that you don’t need to bleach two to three times to get your desired color result (but this is obviously still dependent on how dark your base hair color is!)

So, if you’ve been dyeing (pun intended) to try an ash blonde hue, here are some chic hues you should definitely try if you want to change up your look!

If you're up for a subtle change, here are 10 dark ash blonde hair colors that can elevate any haircut:

1. Gray-beige ash blonde

A color dubbed as “grayge” or “greige” by Japanese hairstylists, this literal cool dye job is stunning when paired with a soft layered cut. The color may look natural under certain lighting, but when seen under sunlight it gives off a covetable brownish-gray hue!

2. Milk tea ash blonde

Milk tea hair isn’t going anywhere as far as we’re concerned—and for good reason! This creamy beige tone is considerably the most popular iteration of a dark ash blonde. You can even opt to have it down with either red or green undertones depending on your skin tone.

3. Mushroom ash blonde balayage

When you’re looking for a more dimensional color, don’t think twice and get balayage! This dye job can instantly add texture ton a one-length cut. The trick is to also tone your highlights so they don’t look yellowish or brassy against this soft beige brown.

Want something warm without dipping into any caramel shades? Then opt for a hint of pink instead! This is a great alternative to your typical ash brown hair color! Or if you’ve tried red or wine tones before, this is that hue in ash blonde form!

6. Slate gray ombre

Wash out all those yellow tones with a gorgeous gray dye job! You can even make it more interesting with an ombré look. Whether you pick an interesting pop of color like pink or blue, or opt for basic caramel blonde tips, this will definitely add more life to a blunt chest-length cut!

7. Golden ash balayage

Again, when trying to add volume or texture to a simple blunt cut, nothing beats a dimensional color! A balayage with subtle and thinly spliced highlights can give any chin-length bob into a style more depth.

8. Cool dark ash blonde

Here’s an iteration of dark ash blonde that’s as subtle as it gets. Though this looks like any ordinary warm brown shade, you’d still need an ash tone to achieve this soft and cool woody hue. This is perfect for anyone who’d like to change up their looking without the need to attract too many eyes from a mile away.

9. Dark blue ash blonde

Undertones are crucial when it comes to ash blonde colors. Here, you’ll see that there’s s subtle tinge of blue that helps create this deep slate gray mask over the predominant ash brown hue. When your hair tends to get brassy quickly—meaning your natural hair undertones are reddish—this is the color you should consider to prevent those warm tones from showing up. Though ash hair colors tend to fade fast, tresses toned with blues or purples don’t go orange even after a couple of washes.

10. Olive ash blonde

Green tones when it comes to hair color can be tricky, but when mixed right, you get this gorgeous olive green tint over brown that looks lush and unique! Though this color is uncommon, we do recommend you to try it if you’re complexion ranges to medium to fair with a yellow undertone. Greens tend to look muddy against red tones, so it’s best to be mindful of that! But in case you're adamant to try even a hint of green on your do, you can opt to tone with more browns just to drown out the mossy shades.
