There's no denying that the internet loves Bretman Rock's "main character" energy. But everyone knows that being the main character comes with its struggles—especially if you're a social media star.
On February 7, Bretman uploaded photos documenting his latest hair experimentation: A '70s-inspired bowl hairstyle. However, what started as a show-and-tell on his Instagram stories, turned into a teaching moment for the influencer, who noticed an influx of negative reactions in his DMs.
According to Bretman, he received many comments from netizens telling him they "didn't like the hair" and he "[shouldn't] do that again." He addressed the negativity surrounding his hair on his IG stories, and uploaded the videos on his feed after.
"I didn’t ask if you guys didn’t like the hair," he said. "I’m doing me. Like, you can do you—that’s the thing. That’s a great part about the world; is that you can do you and I can do me. But do you over there, away from me."
In another video, Bretman looked at the situation from another perspective, reminding his followers to not be scared to experiment with their personal styles.
He said, "That’s why [other people] are basic. Because they’re too afraid to experiment with their look. They just conform with what is beautiful today, but they don’t wanna experiment on what’s beautiful to them. Do you know what I mean?"
And unlike his DMs, Bretman was met with positivity in the comment section of his feed post. Netizens and even celebrities left him compliments for his hairstyle, while some expressed how his words gave them inspiration to continue being their best selves.
All that said, we know that Bretman practices what he preaches. The singer, songwriter, actor, actress, athlete, activist (you know the rest) is known for experimenting with his look and style and his Instagram is full of proof. Who wouldn't be inspired?
So if you're debating whether you should try something completely new with your style, here's a reminder from Bretman: "Don’t be afraid to experiment with your look, because that’s how you find your look."
