5 Bold Haircuts to Try for a New You in 2023
1. Octopus Haircut
Here's a recent haircut trend introduced this year: the octopus haircut. At first glance, it looks like a wolf cut, but there are a couple of things that set the octopus haircut apart from your average trim.
The wolf cut has more volume throughout the hair with the layers blended seamlessly as it moves toward the bottom. With an octopus haircut, the volume is mainly centered at the crown of your head and there’s a clear separation between the top layer of the hair to the bottom layer. That's what gives it an octopus silhouette.
The great thing about the octopus haircut is that it works for any face shape and hair texture. It also makes you look oh-so cool, as seen on Ida Anduyan.
2. A Blunt Bob or Lob Cut
A classic haircut like the bob can be turned into an absolute showstopper when you dye it a bold color. Case in point: this fiery red bob that social media influencer Gela Munoz is rocking. The blunt short cut might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but when done right, it can look gorgeous on anyone.
The bob (or lob, if you prefer something a bit longer) cut is also very versatile. Feel free to subtly adjust the length according to the best way to frame your face shape, or style it in a variety of ways. See how Raiza Contawi and Anne Curtis styled their bob differently below!
3. U-Shaped Haircut
The U-shaped haircut is the younger sibling of the iconic v-cut we all used to have back in the early 2000s. It’s great for people who want layered hair without being too drastic. It also makes your hair appear softer and helps you retain more volume than a v-cut would.
To achieve the u-shaped haircut, you simply have to cut the ends of your hair in the shape of the letter U, as seen on Rhea Bue. This results in subtle layers with more equally lengthened hair as compared to the V-cut which has heavier layering. The U-shaped haircut is very easy to maintain and style, making it a safe yet fresh haircut for the new year.
4. Shaggy Haircut
A shaggy haircut, or shag for short, is characterized by dramatic layers and a frontal fringe. This haircut is great for any hair type, but it looks best on girls with wavy or curly hair to really show texture. That would help define the layers and make them pop, resulting in a true '70s shaggy rockstar hairdo.
This haircut can be worn in different lengths. If you have long hair and want to keep it that way, a long layered shaggy haircut like Bea Alonzo's is a great way to retain length while adding some dimension and edginess to your look. The layers also do a great job of framing and lifting the face, even if you have shoulder-grazing tresses like Vice Ganda's.
5. Pixie Mullet
This haircut is not for the faint of heart, but if you're bold enough, it’s definitely something you’ve got to try at least once in your life. A pixie mullet or mixie (mullet-pixie) is a hybrid of the pixie haircut and the retro mullet, where the hair is cut short at the front, top, and sides, but with longer strands kept at the back.
You can also adjust this hairstyle to better suit your face shape and hair texture. Make the hair at the back as long or as short as you like, or opt for a full set of bangs or baby bangs as seen on Pat Cortez. It’s such a unique and playful hairstyle!
