If you're still hungover from Beyoncé's Coachella set, don't worry—everyone is. In our case, we've started digging for as much behind-the-scenes details about the performance as possible, finding mind-blowing information along the way.
First off, did you notice that she changed her nail polish color in the middle of her performance? Trust us, we didn't either. It's a mystery how she pulled that off. We also found an exclusive interview with Bey's makeup artist himself, spilling essential deets about how he does her makeup for performances.
In an interview with Elle, Sir John shared that he was inspired to create a look that the coolest girl on campus would wear—hence the glittery eye. The rest of her makeup was simple: a black cat eye, some brown liner on the lower lashline, and a pinkish brown color for the lips.
However, when her makeup artist revealed his trick to prepping her skin, we stopped scrolling completely. When asked how he made Beyoncé's makeup sweatproof for the desert heat, he said that his secret was not using moisturizer. Yep, the one thing we're always told to do before makeup? A no-go for major shows like Coachella. He explains, "The moisturizer will lift the makeup, which we don’t want. For a big show like this, I use a primer to prep the skin."
Note that he uses this trick when Bey is performing in extreme conditions, so it's probably not the best skin practice for daily wear. If your makeup melts off easily, try using a light moisturizer or a primer over your skincare.
On top of that, he also layered product to make the look last longer. "I don’t use setting sprays—even though people are constantly asking me! It’s ALL about duality," said the makeup artist. "I layer cream and powder for every stage. Cream and powder foundation, cream and powder blush, cream and powder eyeshadows, and matte and cream lipstick. It’s the only way the makeup stays anchored throughout the day."
Got that? Now all we need is for Beyoncé to drop her skincare routine. We're waiting, B!
