Say goodbye to fading and caking!

Foundation can be quite tricky for people with oily skin. You need to be more strategic with application and find the right products to keep your makeup from fading or caking. It also takes a lot of trial and error to see what products work well with your skin, since some oily complexions are pickier than others.

To save you some time (and money), we asked two celebrity makeup artists, Mikka Marcaida and Jason delos Reyes, to share their tips for achieving a flawless base on this skin type. They’ve also laid down product suggestions that they always carry in their kits for their oily-skinned clients. And who knows, these products could be your next holy grail, too!

Best Foundation Tips for Oily Skin, According to Makeup Artists

1. Prep your skin with a water-based moisturizer.

Before applying foundation, Jason suggests hydrating your skin with a water-based moisturizer first. This helps in soothing the surface of your skin and improving the longevity of your makeup. The makeup artist shares that he likes to use the Origins Ginzing Oil-Free Energy Boosting Gel Moisturizer on his clients because this product provides maximum hydration and wakes up dull and tired skin before adding foundation.

2. Lightly powder your skin before applying foundation.

Another tip that Jason swears by is dusting the face lightly with translucent powder before makeup. According to him, this allows the powder to absorb excess oils, and it also provides a more flawless finish. He reaches for the One/Size translucent setting powder for this step, as this product has a soft-focus effect that can blur any pores and unwanted texture.

3. Use an oil-free and matte foundation.

Once you get to foundation, Mikka recommendings opting for formula that’s fit for your skin type. "Preferably oil-free and matte, and non-pilling. Work [your foundation] in light layers and only on areas [where it’s] needed. This will help avoid having that cakey look," she says.

4. Don't forget to set your makeup.

For the finishing touches, Mikka shares tips on how to properly set in your makeup: "When using cream and liquid products, make sure to lock everything in place with a loose powder. This will ensure that your makeup won’t budge. And finally, a good setting spray [to seal your whole makeup look]."

Her top pick for a setting spray is the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray, which is an alcohol and oil-free formula that lets makeup sit on oily skin without melting, fading and creasing for up to 16 hours! For an option you can shop online, the Urban Decay All Nighter is a cult-favorite worth adding to your cart!
