Beauty trends come and go, but we can all agree that 2020’s beauty history is and will be something worth looking back on. We’ve made a big shift from last year's peachy hues and monochromatic looks, moving on to trends that are perfect for video calls, stay-at-home selfies, and other quick outdoor activities where we need to have our masks on. And with the year slowly coming to a close, we think that revisiting all the trends we wore and loved is just the inspiration we need to look forward to what's next.
Below, we take a look at this year’s most-loved beauty trends that could very well follow us into 2021:
1. Fluffy brows
Defined and fluffed brows are without a doubt considered as one of the biggest beauty game changers of the year. Let’s admit it, creating a brushed, slicked-up brow look will remain our top choice compared to other techniques that require a lot of work and precision. To get the look, all you need to do is to shape and fill your eyebrows with your go-to brow pencil, run your damp spoolie over your brow soap and brush your brows upwards until they're fluffed to your satisfaction.
2. Fox Eye Makeup
Biting into TikTok beauty trends has been one of our guilty pleasures this quarantine, and this eye makeup technique might be one of our favorites. Basically, it'll give you a brow lift-like effect minus the procedure—a look that Bella Hadid absolutely loves.
There are several ways to recreate this model-approved look: You can either sharpen the outer edges of your eye after applying a neutral eyeshadow, or if you want a more enhanced look, you can use your favorite eyeliner to create an exaggerated and high flick.
3. "Euphoria" Makeup
Neon-colored shadows, graphic liners, rhinestones, and glitters have had a major moment in the beauty world thanks to the hit TV series Euphoria. The fact that it won an Emmy award for the Outstanding Contemporary Makeup category was no surprise, given how it inspired all of us to take our looks to the next level. In case you haven't seen the show yet, take this as a sign to go check it out and experiment with your own eye makeup before the year ends!
4. Natural Gloss
Glossy lips will never go out of style. It just comes back in a different way, be it through glitter gloss, a minimalist tinted type, or plumping ones that make your lips seem almost double in size. But in 2020, we've definitely noticed a transition from hyper-glossy moments to a more pared-down, natural shine. It's the look you get when you dab some gloss or lip balm over a matte lip for a hydrated yet no-frills finish.
5. Fresh, Dewy Skin
This year, we have tweaked our obsession with "glass skin" to a humid-weather friendly look that's still fresh and natural. Instead of highlighter and foundation, tinted moisturizers and glow primers became our best friends for easing into having a radiant-looking skin. You can also look into adding in skincare-infused products to your makeup kit to achieve a more effortless glow! 6. Low-Key Spidery Lashes
We always love a good mascara moment, and fluttery and flirty lash looks were all over the 'gram in 2020. Our current obsession? The jet-black coated wispy lashes rocked by TikTok star Addison Rae. Mind you, there' no need for falsies or lash extensions to get this look. Simply give your lashes a boost with an eyelash curler and coat it with a jet-black lengthening and volumizing mascara. Swipe your mascara on your bottom lashes as well for a more defined look.
7. Pastel Eyeshadow
A playful color on the lids is one of the quickest beauty pick-me-ups we have in this mask-wearing era. You can wear it however you want to, but you can always start by dabbing your favorite shade on your lids for a soft spring look. If you're feeling adventurous, try layering a few colors together for more dimension!
8. Bitten Lips
The K-beauty-inspired gradient lip look is here to stay. Just like Kathryn Bernardo, we can't get enough of lip tints for achieving a sheer wash of color, mostly because of how easy it is to do. To cop it, apply three small dots of tint in your bottom lip, and then blend it out using your fingertips. For a more diffused look, press your lips together to evenly distribute color to your upper lip.
9. Floating Liner
We've seen everyone from Gigi Hadid, Kylie Jenner, Lucy Boynton, to Ariana Grande wear this cool anti-wing look. It instantly elevates your eye makeup game with a single stroke—you don't even need to have pro cat eye skills! And if we had to choose, our favorite floating eyeliner moment of the year would definitely be Ariana's in the Rain on Me music video!
10. Multi-Colored Nails
This isn't a makeup trend, but you've probably seen this nail trend everywhere or even tried it yourself. It's one of the most refreshing and playful manicure trends of the year, and we love that it's easy to DIY! To give it a shot, try painting your nails with alternating nail polish shades that follow a theme (let's say, mauve and beige for a fall-inspired look) or picking a completely different shade for each nail (like a rainbow-inspired mani). Whatever your choice may be, the result will always be IG-worthy!
