All the stars who walked for the Bench Under The Stars show had something in common: big, sexy, voluminous tresses that seemed to fall effortlessly into a sultry look. If you’ve been looking to add that extra oomph to your hair, here’s a way to enjoy long tresses without having to wait for your hair to grow out. Hairstylist John Valle, who worked on Solenn Heussaff and Julia Barretto’s drop-dead gorgeous manes during the show gives us the answer: hair extensions.
If you think clip-in extensions are reserved for the realm of pageant girls, you should know that store-bought hair has been around for a long time, and worn by actresses and models on the runways, the red carpet, and shoots. For industry insiders, they’ve become a necessary tool in their styling kits, much like nude underwear and basic-hued pumps.
But you don’t have to be in the industry to enjoy the benefits of extensions. John says, "To achieve that extra volume you’ve always dreamed of, all it takes is around seven to nine clip-in extensions."
Before choosing the add-ons, John makes sure to double check his client’s current hair length, color and thickness since all those factors would dictate the kind and number of add-ons his client will need. It is best to acquire extensions that are compatible with hot styling tools—like those with real human hair since you would want to customize your own look.
"I always choose hair extensions that are two shades lighter than the natural hair color [of my clients], particularly for those with dyed hair to give it more dimension. I also make sure the length is just below their chest area, because if it gets too long, it’s going to look super heavy and not great for that swingy, sexy, full-bodied effect you’re used to seeing in shows." he adds.
Before installing clip-in hair extensions to [the hair close to] your scalp, you will need to prep your hair properly. "For add-ons to stay secure, veer away from shine sprays, serums and conditioner. You will need a really good volumizer and extra-hold hairspray. Instead of shine sprays, I used dry shampoo for that added texture and bounce." John shares.
As far as care goes, hair extensions ought to be cared for like your own real hair—brush it often and wash it with a good shampoo and conditioner.
