The health benefits of coconut oil need no introduction. Its healthy fats and natural antioxidants are reason enough to incorporate it into your diet! However, don't forget that this oil has major beauty perks, too. You can use it for practically any beauty need, with only a few exceptions. Find out our favorite ways to use this gift from the Earth below!

1. As a hair mask

Coconut oil is an overall amazing moisturizer, but it also does wonders for the hair. Using it as a weekly hair mask can help dry hair get back to a healthy state since the strands sip the moisture from the oil right up. It's like an all-natural hair treatment! Leave the oil on your hair for around 20 to 30 minutes (or even longer, if you want to!) and rinse it off in the shower. It will feel a bit greasy on your first try, but the results will truly be worth it.

2. As a body moisturizer

We swear by a long list of body lotions and butters, but this all-natural alternative remains one of our favorites. It's amazing especially on very dry, sensitive skin that regular lotion can't fix. Make sure to use a small amount if you're a beginner because things can get very greasy really fast. But if it's naturally glowing skin you need, it's worth the effort. In fact, Iza Calzado swears by it!

3. As a bronzing oil

Working on your summer tan? Coconut oil can help with that, too. Just apply a thin layer of it over your skin before you hit the sun to moisturize and soothe your skin as it develops some color. Not only that, you can also use it as a body moisturizer afterwards to maintain the tan, since hydrated skin is less likely to peel. That said, coconut oil is not an alternative to sunscreen, so don't forget to apply a separate sunblock beforehand!

4. As a natural lip balm

A little DIY in the kitchen could have you whipping up your own lip balm in no time. All you have to do is fill up a small container with coconut oil, and then mix in a few drops of other oils you have on hand (jojoba, avocado and argan oil work pretty well with this!). When you're done, stick the container in the freezer until the oils solidify into a balm. Easy peasy!

5. As a dental detox oil

Oil pulling first gained popularity as a natural alternative to mouthwash. It involves swishing some type of oil in your mouth for 20 to 30 minutes in order to wash out the toxins in your teeth and gums. Some even say it helps lighten stains on your teeth! Coconut oil, for one, is the most popular oil for this method since it has natural antibacterial and anti-fungal properties that can protect you from harmful microbes. Do note that it's important to use a high quality kind of virgin coconut oil for oil pulling, and an organic one if possible!
