What first was just another shiny new building on Makati Avenue (with quite the memorable name) became more than merely a fun tongue twister after I booked an appointment for a cut and hair treatment. The humid weather we'd been having had taken its toll on my chemically-treated locks; the frizzies were starting, and it was time for reinforcements.

Lee Chul Hair KerKer, a hip salon franchise from Seoul, Korea that specializes in trendy, precision cutting with specialized customer care—all with a cool Zen approach—had just opened its first Manila branch this October 2009. With stunning interiors, the place maximized their corner on the street by putting up a minimalist, two-storey salon. The first level is a cutting floor, roomy enough to comfortably fit a long waiting table, a photo wall (for camera addicts like us—got to love their forward-thinking) and a shampoo area neatly tucked away in the back. I needed to know if they were more than just a pretty face, of course, and enlisted the expertise of their top stylists to give my tired strands some TLC.

Korean stylists Maya and Bryan started off the pampering with a Kérastase Powerdose Repair Treatment (P1000/ampoule), which promised to resurrect my damaged locks, make them softer and give them a healthy-looking, pre-processed shine. After around half an hour came the cut, which I was told was trademark “Korean style” (rates range from P600 for ladies' haircut with Korean stylists and P500 with regular stylists) meaning precision cutting but with a more flattering bent than stereotypical “Asian” cuts, which tend to be more uneven. I also initially asked Maya to not create any layers since I needed the length, but she convinced me to try to blend in a few to break up the heaviness of my look, and give me more style to work with while growing out my hair.

Even though I knew what she set out to do, I was still pleasantly surprised at how light my hair felt afterwards, considering she only layered the ends and those at the face line. My baby-fine strands also didn't go stringy nor limp, and the treatment gave my hair back some of its lost luster—all in all a great day at the salon, made even better by the amazingly reasonable price.

If you're out for a trendy but feminine style, targeted hair care or just want to indulge in some signature Korean hairstyling, Lee Chul Hair KerKer is a one-stop shop. The airy, spacious salon almost has a boutique feel to it, making you feel instantly much more fabulous even just the moment you step in the door.
