MAC Cosmetics has surprised us yet again with fearless runway trends. The Autumn/Winter 2013 trends pay homage to the undone, worn-in beauty of grunge '90s and the strong intensity of the unofficial favorite color of fashion people: black. From the punchy tints on the lips in different shades of red, it suddenly fast forwards to the gleaming power of clear gloss.
We chatted with MAC Makeup Artist Amber Dreadon to give us some tips on how to translate the Autmn/Winter 2013 runway looks to real life here in tropical Manila.
Carbon, soot, squid ink or whatever you may call it, black will always be the color of "fierce." This trend dares us to be more bold with our usual smoky eye—it's anti-glamour, anti-beauty, if I may. It's a protest against the previous looks of polished and perfected features. Amber advices to use Paint Pot in Groundwork. It's a nice base on the eyelids to keep the pigment on for hours. She also shared that it can also be used to contour the face.
This trend is the most challenging to decode. It was spooky, almost ghost-like. It is a different version of ethereal makeup. We were curious on how to do it with our warm Filipina skin tone. Amber suggested by, again, keeping things balanced. A grey eyeshadow may be warmed up by little peach flush on the cheeks. Intead of wearing a full nude lip, pat the nude lipstick on the the edges of the lips to let the natural color of the lips peek through.
The bloody puckers can look a bit too vampire-ish instead of polished vamp if not done right. This look can also be achieved by mixing colors. An easy way to keep it nice and neat is by applying a layer of lip pencil first. She suggests on looking for the right dark lip shade for your skin tone. Amber believes that makeup is like prescription. What works for your friend might not work for you. If you're too intimidated with the overwhelming number of shades at the MAC store, the artists will surely be glad to help you.
This trend is all about gloss, specifically MAC Clear lipglass. The skin is so shiny it seems like it has been coated with shellac. Since it's humid in the Philippines even on December, Amber suggested to keep the glossover minimal. A dab of the clear lipglass on the eyes while keeping the rest of the face powdered will keep you on-trend without looking like you've just got home from a fried food festival.
