7 Tips on How You Can Be Your Own Hairstylist Tips straight from a pro.

Not everyone can afford to have a hairstylist at their beck and call, but have you ever wondered if it were possible to be great at styling your own hair? We caught up with celebrity hairstylist and Creations salon owner, Lourd Ramos, at the Goody Hair Affair event and got fantastic tips on how you can perfect styling your own locks:

1. Always prep your hair.

Prior to styling, Lourd suggests using mousse to add volume to the hair and anti-frizz spray to tame the locks. Another product he highly recommends is a heat protecting spray to control damage on your strands caused by hot tools.

2. Your hair tools matter.

“You always have to make sure you use the right tools for your hair,” he says. We learned that when detangling wet hair, wide tooth combs will work best because they don't cause breakage. When blow drying your hair, you should pick up a blow drying brush because the holes in it will allow heat to pass through it, regulate the temperature, and control damage. Remember to invest in good quality hair tools—they will last you a lifetime.

3. Practice using a blow dryer!

While most Pinays are used to using a flat iron to straighten or curl their hair, Lourd suggests that using a blow dryer is better. “Blow drying adds volume,” he says. And won't leave your tresses looking flat!

4. Clean up your baby hairs with this clever trick.

Annoyed with those little baby hairs that stick up when you pull your hair back into a sleek ponytail? Lourd reveals that you can tame them by spritzing on some hairspray on a fine-toothed comb and running it on top of your hair.

5. Hair rollers will give you pretty hair, too!

Go back to the classics—there’s a reason why they’ve stuck around in the first place. We learned about Goody’s Start Style Finish Select-a-Curl—velcro rollers that you stretch out flat, so you can adjust how big you want your curls to be. Lourd suggests hair curlers to add volume to your crown and create pretty soft curls—perfect for every day! (P.S. They’re fantastic for traveling, too!)

6. Take care of your tools!

“Taking care of your tools will make them last forever. It’s important to clean them regularly,” Lourd says. To get rid of residue and other gunk that’s left on your hair tools, he says to first mix some soap and cold water in a bowl. Then, soak your hair tools for 20-30 minutes. Afterwards, rinse your tools and soak them in lukewarm water to get rid of all the dirt and to sanitize them.

7. Have a peg!

Whether you’re going for waves, an out-of-water look, or sweet braids, have a peg on hand to have an idea of how you want to style your hair.
