The Preview Emerging Fashion Talent Awards (PEFTA) returns this year with a twist. Starting from the PEFTA hot list that debuted last year (which itself evolved from Preview's annual Designers to Watch), PEFTA now includes a mini-competition that determines half of the list. Here's how it goes:
Five emerging talents will be chosen among the fashion design students nominated by participating design schools Slim's Fashion and Arts School, School of Fashion and the Arts, and the Fashion Institute of the Philippines. These five students will join five other young designers to make up this year's list of Preview Designers to Watch.
The nominees this year—tasked to submit a mood board and twelve original sketches based on this year's theme, New, a design of which they have to execute—include:
- Karina Nash, Fashion Institute of the Philippines
- Renz Reyes, Fashion Institute of the Philippines
- Riza Bulawan, Slim's Fashion and Arts School
- Dan Duran, School of Fashion and the Arts
- Erika Adona, Slim's Fashion and Arts School
- Seph Bagasao, Fashion Institute of the Philippines
These six names will be whittled into five by a panel of judges, who will choose the remaining participants based on their creations' creativity, craftsmanship, and retail potential. These five will be given seed money to produce their collection for the PEFTA fashion show later this year, as well as receive mentorship from fashion industry leaders.
The rest of the designers that make up the PEFTA 2011 list include (you heard it here first!):
The final list of ten promising talents will be announced in an editorial in the September issue of Preview. Meanwhile, stay tuned to find out more about the PEFTA experience of Karina, Renz, Riza, Dan, Erika, and Seph!
