Japanese designer Mihara Yasuhiro is now available in Manila.

Mihara Yasuhiro (his namesake label spelled MIHARAYASUHIRO) has developed a cult menswear following that the Asian pop entertainment industry has come to love. A graduate of Tama Art University, Mihara Yasuhiro's career started out with shoe design back in 1997. But it was his collab with PUMA that put his name under the fashion industry's radar during the early 2000s.

In Japan, the designer has dressed the country's biggest acts like popular boyband (or what the Japanese like to call "Idol" group) ARASHI, which Emma Stone once described on a talk show to be the "One Direction of Japan." While in the K-pop scene, he's dressed few members from EXO, including Xiumin and former member turned solo rapper Tao. Across the pacific, A$AP Rocky has gone to wear a few select pieces from the designer as well.

For his latest women's collection, Mihara delves into a rebel and rockabilly vibe inspired by photographs of German working class youth of the 1950s to 1960s. The result is a fun and quirky collection of denims, juxtaposed lace bomber jackets, and embroidered shirt dresses. But why bring the brand to the Philippines? "I heard Filipinos love shoes," he tells us candidly over email. In this exclusive interview with Preview, Mihara gives us a peek at his Spring/Summer 2017 women's line, and shares the story behind his design aesthetic and what he loves about the Philippines.

What made you decide to enter the Philippine market?

"The ASSEMBLY store concept was very attractive to me. The Philippines is a country that I have been paying close attention to and is growing in terms of fashion nowadays. I’m really happy that there's a good relationship between the Philippines and Japan, and it's also one of the countries I'd want to visit."

How has your aesthetic changed through the years?

"I think it didn’t change much. I think that fashion is about celebrating of people's lives. It also requires intelligence. I always think that the interaction and influence between various arts and cultures is important."

What makes the MIHARAYASUHIRO brand global?

"The harmony of contradictory things. For example, 'seriousness' mixed with 'humor,' or 'reason' and 'madness.'"

"I heard that it is a country where people love shoes. My career in fashion started as a shoe designer, so I would like to spread out MIHARA YASUHIRO even with just shoes. But I have my women's line available as well."

What about the Philippines excites you?

"The shoes, the fashion, and the overall lifestyle. "

MIHARAYASUHIRO is available in ASSEMBLY at SM Aura.
