Blog: Hello Rio!
What made you want to try this trend?
I immediately found it interesting and thought it would be fun new accessory to experiment with. I especially love that it is available in many different styles, fabrics, and finishes.
How do you build your outfit around it?
It depends on the kind collar. If it's heavily ornamented like mine, I would either choose simpler garments to go with it or, like what I did in this photo, get pieces that look similar (as if to mirror each other). If it were a more casual-looking collar, I'd probably wear more extravagant pieces.
For this particular evening look, I decided to stick to the colors seen in my collar: Black and Gold. I chose a plain top since my collar was already too fancy, but added on a single pendant necklace to make the chest area look extra interesting.
How do you make the look your own?
I am a fan of collars and I love accessories. So I guess I don't have to do much to make it look more like "me". I guess it's just a matter of choosing the right style and kind of collar for myself. Naturally, I would pick ones that look more classic, earthy or bohemian.
How do you balance your outfit to avoid making it look over-the-top?
The collar is an accessory. So I treat it like such. I make sure it complements the outfit to make it look better and not distract and make it look "too much."
Can you give tips on how to wear this trend?
1. Experiment with illusion. Look more sophisticated or dapper by adding on a preppy collar. Using this accessory will make you look like you are layering up. Have fun and play with colored or printed ones. You might even want to try detachable cuffs while you're at it.
2. Play with silhouettes. Collars can also be used to create interesting silhouettes on your neck/chest area. Using this add-on above any low neckline will create a pretty cut-out in between.
3. Make a statement. Use it as your main accessory. Make any plain, classic, or simple outfit more stylish by wearing a unique collar.
How would you wear it during the day, at night, to a party, to work?
For everyday: I'd choose a simpler version and wear it with a light sleeveless top and a pair of casual jeans and sneakers or heels.
For work: I'd choose a collar that is not too embellished or too loud. I'd probably wear it with a comfy sweater, a pencil skirt and heels--comfortable yet professional.
For an event: I'd go for an ornamented, embellished collar and use it pretty much like a bib necklace. I would use it as my statement piece.
