Blog: Love Chic
What made you try this trend?
As you can see in my blog and Lookbook account, my style has always been on the colorful side! I love putting different hues together so I'm really glad color-blocking is a strong summer trend.
How do you build your outfit around it?
My other favorite look is [going] monochromatic, which is kind of at the other end of [the spectrum] to color-blocking, so I just do the opposite, I see to it that the pieces I wear together are not of the same hue.
How do you style it to make the look your own?
Aside from the fact that I like to dress up in happy colors, I also like comfy clothes. You'll rarely see me dressed to the nines; my style is more street chic than sophisticated, and it shows even when I'm trying out a particular trend.
How do you balance your look to avoid making it look over-the-top?
This may seem weird, but I view color-blocking like music chords! The notes may be different but they belong to the same chord family—the color scheme has to have a similar sense of coherence. Like for this outfit, there's yellow and orange, blue and turquoise.
How do you accessorize the color-blocking trend?
Very minimally, I just wear either a necklace or a couple of bangles.
Can you give tips on how to wear this trend?
The trick is simply to make sure that the colors don't clash. Neon on neon would probably be too much; red and green would be more suitable for a Christmas costume. Work with colors that are flattering on your skin tone. Also, be careful where you wear the brightest color; it should be the area you want to emphasize, like if you're broad-shouldered, wear your skirt maybe in bright orange and your top in light green, and so on.
How would you wear it during the day, night, to the beach, to a party, to work?
At night, I'd wear a color-blocked dress with sexy heels. To the beach, I'd put together a tiny top, maxi skirt and sandals in pastels, plus a necklace and a pretty hair band or hat. To a party, maybe I'd pair a small flowy top with a flirty skirt and pretty wedges. In the office, it would be a blouse, a high-waisted body-con skirt and a cropped blazer paired with pumps. My shoes and bags would be in neutral colors to balance it out.
