Find out what the hype is all about.

What: Kat Von D Tattoo Liner

What It Is: The Tattoo Liner is one of, if not the most popular offering of Kat Von D. It’s a high-pigment, waterproof liner that promises to “stay put all day for a fade-, melt-, crack-, and run-resistant finish.” It’s also one of the best-selling eyeliners across Sephora stores in the US.

Current Condition:

I’m not a big fan of eye makeup—let’s get that right. So if you’re looking for tips on how to get the perfect feline flick or smokey eye, I’m not the best person for the job. I don’t even own an eyeshadow palette that I paid for myself, which goes without saying that my everyday makeup routine for my eyes mainly consists of two steps: eyelash curler and mascara. Whenever I feel like upping the ante though, I find myself reaching for a black eyeliner inside my makeup kit. My only issue with wearing eyeliner, however, is that I can’t seem to make it past three hours without it smudging all over the place and giving me a set of panda eyes. Now, anyone would agree that it’s the most frustrating thing ever if you spent at least 30 minutes trying to perfect your winged liner.

Thing is, I’ve already tried a bunch of eyeliners available on the market and most of them promise to be waterproof and smudge-proof—be it in pencil, liquid, or gel—but I still end up getting dismayed and yet again on another hunt for "the one." My skin is also on the acidic side, which could be a big factor as to why makeup tends to oxidize faster in my case, thereby melting off all traces of hard work I’ve put into fine-tuning my winged liner.

All these considered, when news broke that Sephora Philippines is bringing in Kat Von D, the first thing that immediately came to my mind was how famous the beauty brand is for their eyeliner. Naturally, I needed to see what the hype is all about.

How I Used It:

Back when I was in college, I used to hate how I looked whenever I wore eyeliner. But as with everything else, it took trial and error before I discovered the best way to wear it that complements my eye shape; I have deep set almond eyes, albeit a bit bigger compared to my fellow Asian girls. And personally, I think the K-beauty puppy liner trend works well for me. I prefer a subtle wing that extends with a slightly downward direction, and I only draw on the outer half of my upper lash line just to elongate my eyes a little bit.

Conclusion:

True to its claim, Kat Von D’s Tattoo Liner glides smoothly with a super fine brush tip that allows precise application, which is a plus for me because I’m usually only after a subtle flick, nothing too bold or thick. Application-wise, I find that doing quick retouches may be a bit problematic. Because the applicator is a brush and not a felt tip, the ink flow easily gets interrupted when it’s clogged, so gliding through on top of existing product is less of a breeze the second time around than when you’re working with clean, makeup-free lids.

As I’ve mentioned earlier, I’m not big on eye makeup so using eye primer has never been the norm for me (maybe I should think about it in the future, though). But even without primer, I lasted several hours without looking like a raccoon. I wouldn’t say it’s 100% smudge-free at the end of the day, but provided that I don’t unconsciously rub my eyes or that oiliness does not get the best of me, then smudging won’t be a problem. It’s also probably a good thing that I don’t apply liner on my lower lids.

Perhaps the thing I love the most about it though is that it dries up pretty quickly—five seconds in and I can run my finger through it without worrying about the product spreading everywhere. I’m not really crazy about its gothic packaging either, but if it gets the job done—and for me, it does—then I don’t mind.

Overall, I can see why beauty junkies from all over the world rave about this product—it’s probably one of the best ones I’ve tried so far, too. (And believe me, I’ve tried quite a lot.)
