All your questions, answered.

Sunscreen and eye cream aren't the be-all end-all of anti-aging. We age elsewhere, too, in places those heaven-sent products unfortunately can't reach. Take our hair, for example. It can go gray right under our noses, and even sunscreen can't help it. In fact, hair graying can start in your 20s, which might be why you're reading this article in the first place.

But no worries, your locks aren't doomed to be colorless for the rest of your life. Ahead, trichologist Teresa Cruz of Svenson Philippines gives us the dos and don'ts of dealing with gray hair in your prime years.

Hi Teresa! What commonly causes gray hair growth in younger people?

"Hair graying is an irreversible reality of life and is often associated with growing old. This happens when the color-producing cells stop producing pigment. It may happen to all of us at some point. And if it happens at a young age, it may be due to stress, anemia, lack of proper diet, vitamins, habits of smoking. But the main reason for premature graying is genetic."

Is it normal to grow gray hair in your 20s?

"No, it is not normal. Asians usually start growing gray hair in their late 30s. Half of all people have a significant amount of gray hair by the time they turn 50."

Is plucking a good idea?

"Plucking is not an advisable activity and definitely not the solution to getting rid of gray hair. Although plucking gray hair will not cause three or more gray hairs to grow back in its place, it is not good because it can destroy and traumatize the hair follicle and possibly lead to bald patches."

How about dyeing the gray strands? Do you recommend doing so?

"Hair dyeing is a commonly used remedy to gray hair. And if that’s what it takes to make a person happy and confident, why not, although it contains harsh chemicals which may lead to hair breakage, dry hair, and hair loss. We [at Svenson] offer the proper solution to counter and prevent this from happening."

Are there other ways to deal with gray hair that you can recommend?

"Avoiding the factors that cause it [mentioned above] and maintaining a healthy lifestyle with proper nutrition."
