There's no way we can deny our love for intricately styled hair. The mere sight of Prada's bejeweled side ponytail from Fall 2015 and Marchesa's straight and sculpted hairstyle from Spring 2017 are enought to motivate us to never leave our tresses unkempt. That is, until the subject of messy hair comes up. Ah, those beach-ready locks!

We had the chance to have messy hair connoisseur himself, hairstylist John Valle of Styluxe Salon, teach us the ropes to acing this 'do. We're pretty sure you've already heard of him; he's the hair expert behind Kathryn Bernardo's flawless locks, and a go-to for the likes of Solenn Heussaff and Janella Salvador. He can create the "I woke up like this" look even with his eyes closed, and with his help, we've come up with a practical guide to mastering celebrity-approved messy hair!

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

For giving volume and body to the hair, John loves Bedhead's Small Talk and Sugar Shock, which are similar to Beachborn's Sea Salt Spray and Tresemme's Extra Hold Hairpsray. He also swears by Bedhead's Manipulator, a texturizing paste that instantly adds dimension to the hair. These products are essential for finishing touches and making sure your hair is on the good side of being messy.

For tools, John's recommendations don't include a brush, believe it or not! According to him, a hair dryer and a curling iron with small and medium-sized barrels are enough to nail messy waves on your own.

THE LOOKS

We asked John for his favorite ways to create the picture-perfect messy 'do that celebrities love, and he gave us three that you can definitely create yourself. From heatless waves to sultry locks, here are John's simple how-tos for easy messy hairstyle!

1. Curly, messy hair

If you have straight hair, use a curling iron with a small or medium-sized barrel and curl your hair in sections. For more body, focus the curls from the middle to the ends of the hair. Roughen up the curls with your hands until you achieve natural-looking waves. Set the final product with your favorite hairspray or some sea salt spray for more texture!

2. Heatless waves

A less hair damaging alternative is this heatless technique. Start with putting your hair into a messy braid, then coat the braid with hair mousse using your hands. Seal in the waves by letting the braid "cook" for as long as you want it to. After you take the tie off, it will reveal your messy hair that looks utterly effortless! (P.S. If you're not afraid of a little heat or are in a rush, you can blowdry your braided locks to speed up the process.)

3. Effortless, messy hair

For something quick and easy, put your hair up in a messy bun and apply a generous amount of setting lotion or a few spritzes of water. You can leave it there or proceed with blowdrying to let loose tendrils fall and frame your face.

Got that? Now go practice these looks at home and don't forget to document the results with a selfie!
