You can find inspiration for your next makeup look anywhere, even from the two-dimensional characters that shaped your childhood and teenage years. There's actually been a rekindled interest in anime in the past years. You can partially blame it on the box-office hit Kimi no Na Wa, the Sailormoon remake and its ultra kawaii makeup products, and the live action remake of cult classic Ghost in the Shell, but there's no doubt that the genre is on a mainstream high.

As a self-confessed anime fan, I asked fellow enthusiasts actress Glaiza de Castro to pick three of her favorite heroines and makeup artist Sylvina Lopez to create wearable non-cosplay makeup inspired by these characters. Why? Because you don't need to take the character's facial features and costumes literally. "It was more about playing with an emulation of the character than like an overt transformation into the character," Sylvina shares. In these three looks, we'll show you how it's possible to create fashion-forward beauty based on your favorite magical sailor warrior, giant-slaying herione, and cyber punk robot.

1. Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell

A cyborg with a human brain or a "ghost," Major Motoko Kusanagi is a lean mean super soldier heading the anti-terrorism unit of Section 9 in a hyper-mechanized future.

Traits:

Motoko is characterized by her stoic and expressionless face. She's also an androgynous fighting machine who's quite curious about her robotic state. While her wardrobe is this cyber punk mix of '80s jackets, sexy bodysuits, and her heavy duty police suit.

Sylvina: For Motoko it was about playing with the futuristic theme but keeping it strong and subtle. It was about skin focus to keep it sleek but still powerful. I looked at each of the character’s wardrobe and how it was designed. When it comes to animation, I love how you feel that the details of the characters are so thought out. I used all of the shades NYX Duo Chromatic Illuminating Powders (P400, SM Megamall) over the MAC's Strobe Cream (P1800, SM Megamall) to get a very shiny pearlised effect on the skin. We also brushed up Glaiza's brows for that even more undone and androgynous feel.

"For the duo chrome highlighters I used layers of different highlighters with different tones."

2. Mikasa Ackerman from Attack on Titan

Traits:

Though Mikasa is one the most strong-willed, badass female characters in the series, her straight brows and bored expression downplay her strength and give her an unassuming look.

S: With Mikasa, it was a bout bold colors applied in a subtle way to kind of show that quiet strength. I went for rich colors like rust and dark red but I made sure to apply them in subtle ways. I went for a wash of rust over the lids using the Shiseido BR329 Shimmering Eye Cream Color (P1150, SM Megamall) and then I lined her eyes with a dark red gel liner. I also used a terracotta shade (Ofra Long Lasting Liquid Lipstick in Miami Fever, P850, beautymnl.com) on the lips, but I applied it with a fluffy blending brush to get a more velvety stained effect instead of the bold swipe of color that a traditional lip brush gives. It's also noticeable that we tried to straighten Glaiza's brows, evening our her arch a bit, to soften her look.

"It was washes of blended color for Mikasa for a subdued but strong effect."

3. Hino Rei/Sailor Mars from Sailor Moon

Hino Rei is the civilian name of Sailor Mars who's a part of the Sailor Soldiers team, a band of magical girls who battle evil mysitcal forces on Earth.

Traits

Beautiful and smart, Rei is also known to be stylish and feisty (her school uniform is unlike the rest of the other girls on the team since she attended an affluent private school). As Sailor Mars, she harnesses the power of fire in a red-skirted costume.

S: So each of the characters obviously had a signature color, like red for Sailor Mars. The emphasis was on the red lip so I used a bright red liquid lipstick, Ofra Long lasting Liquid Lipstick in Atlantic City (P850, Zalora) and I patted the J.Cat Sparkling Powder in King’s Robe (P239, Up Town Mall) on top and finished it off with a gloss.

"For Rei, who is quite feisty, I wanted to play with a bold lip and graphic liner."
